The WWVPOA will be contracting a couple of maintenance projects for our lake. The first which should occur before winter will be to dredge the channel and the upper end and clean out the creek side of debris at the drainage pipe under Wildwood Drive. This is necessary to empty the silt retainment catch we had created and is now filled up from upstream runoff.
The second project will be to address the aquatic plant and algae growth expanding in the lake especially this summer. We have had an Aquatic Ecologist consultant look at the condition and identify potential corrective actions. The consultant informed us that the plant growth is Hydrilla verticillata a very persistent non-native invasive plant that has been spreading across Virginia and the US. The bad news is this plant due to it's reproductive ability cannot be eradicated completely. The good news is it can be controlled through chemical and biological methods, they do not recommend using mechanical removal as it will break the plant into pieces which will create more plants. We are exploring both other methods in combination and looking at the long term health of the lake to control future Hydrilla outbreaks.
We will keep the POA informed of our research and progress, please refer to the Resource Center for more information about Hydrilla and controlling the plant spread.
