Unicorn Dance

The Qi Lin or the Unicorn (also known as Kirin) is another kind of mythical beast that has the body size of a deer, a tail similar to that of a cow, high hoofs, a fleshy horn on top of the head, yellow-colored abdomen and black colorful back hair. They do not kill other living creatures and are non -carnivorous, thus they are revered as holy creature. The Qi Lin Dance was created to give life to this auspicious animal bringing prosperity, peace and health to the people and this practice was handed down from one generation to the next. The Qi Lin developed into two kinds, the Green Creek Qi Lin and The Gao Hua Qi Lin. At present, this art is practiced in areas East of the Pearl river and among the Hakka people in northern part of the river. The Hakka people call theirs the Rooster Lion instead of Qi Lin, though they have similar features and dance movements. The Qi Lin Dance are performed during birthday party or opening of new business establishment, but should not be done during funeral services or new baby's first full month celebration. The Qi Lin Dance is perform with backup music produced by big cymbals , gong and a small drum.
