Pi Xiu or 貔貅 is an ancient beast, which have the physical form similar to a tiger and a bear, its fur are gray and is sometimes known as a White Bear. Pi Xiu represents bravery, righteous, and chivalry. Pi Xiu dance are usually done by people with martial arts background, due to the difficult movement required during the dance. The head of the Pi Xiu is smaller than that of the lion head use in the lion dance, and is about the same size of the Qi Lin or Unicorn. The Pi Xiu have a sunken eyes, red mouth, red tongue, and green nose. On its heads are a pair of small ears, in between these ears are three black iron horn, the middle horn is bigger. Pi Xiu have a set of fierce eyes that is usually covered with red paper when not in use. The colorful body of the Pi Xiu is similar to the Qi Lin, the musical sound use to accompanied the Pi Xiu dance is very close to those use in the Qi Lin dance. The musical instruments used are cymbals, gong and drum. During Pi Xiu dance there is usually a Green Monkey 青猴 and a Big Head Buddha 大头佛 that dances with the Pi Xiu . According to legend, the Pi Xiu was a fierce creature that was tame by The Ru Lai Buddha 如来佛祖 , one day the Ru Lai Buddha left the palace and the Pi Xiu was assigned to guard the "Fragrance Bag" 香包 , then came the Green Monkey and the Big Head Buddha who intend to steal the "Fragrance Bag", the Pi Xiu who was tamed by the Ru Lai Buddha could not use his killer instinct to preserve the "Fragrance Bag" but must use another way to stop their intention, the situation became the plot use in most of the Pi Xiu dance. In the Pi Xiu dance there are other situation like the "Pi Xiu and the three Buddha" 貔貅三佛, "Walk the Four Door"走四门 , "Auspicious Buddha led the Pi Xiu"瑞佛领貔貅, "Pi Xiu plays with the Green Monkey" 貔貅戏青猴 and etc.. The Pi Xiu can also have solo dance, or two Pi Xiu dance, aside from those kind of dance, there could also be a small Pi Xiu dance. Pi Xiu dance was introduced to southern China , like Guangzhou 广州 and Fujian 福建 provinces through Jiangxi province 江西省.
