Overview
Thanks, everyone, for a wonderful Winter Escape 2020 retreat! Because of Covid-19, we will be doing things differently in 2021. There will be no in-person Winter Escape retreat this year to ensure we do all we can to stop the spread of Covid-19. There will be virtual events though, and there will be more info to come! Because the Winter Escape planning team reserved lodging soon after last year's Winter Escape, we are offering the small cabins for those who are interested to book them for their own use. The main reason we are opening up the cabins is to offer small "pods" of friends to utilize the cabins at the same discounted rate we reserved them for back in March 2020. There will be no programming from the Winter Escape volunteer team, and you will be responsible for all aspects of your visit. Check below for more details. To keep up to date on virtual events coming up, keep an eye on our Facebook pages for "Winter Escape" and "UU Young People in the DC Area."
Winter Escape 2021 programming will be virtual this year!! Join with Unitarian Universalist-minded people ages 18-35+ in the DC area for online sessions and workshops that will replicate some aspects of what a typical in-person Winter Escape getaway entails. More information will be coming soon!
If you are interested in joining 2022 Winter Escape, you can read more about the location and programming via this website, and keep a lookout for updates! (We will be booking cabins around March 2021, so planning will begin around then!) The retreat is usually held at the beautiful Westmoreland State Park (VA), roughly a 2-hour car ride south from DC! [...different location than the Young Souls' retreats.] The retreat is held over Presidents day weekend: for 2022 that will be Fri 2/18/22 (6pm) to Mon 2/21/22 (10am). Click the tabs ("Show sidebar") at left for details.
In-Person Cabin Reservations for 2021:
As stated above, we are making the small cabins available at the same discounted rates for small pods of friends to use this year. If you choose to take a cabin reservation, the Winter Escape volunteer team is NOT providing any in-person programming, organization, or coordination for your stay at the park. If you decide to accept the reservation for a cabin you will be added to the cabin reservation as a "responsible party". You will be responsible for organizing transportation, food, and linens for your stay, and for finding and organizing other guests if you would like others to join your cabin for your stay.
The five cabins being offered are the same cabins that overlook the Potomac River that Winter Escape has reserved in the past. You can find the locations of the cabins (21-25) on the trail map here: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/data/trail-guide-westmoreland.pdf. Each cabin has beds for up to six people: One queen bed in one bedroom, and two bunk beds in another bedroom. We are not offering the main Potomac River Retreat or other cabins for reservation.
To submit a request for booking a cabin, please submit the form here: https://forms.gle/Gu4TWBjTMLYrjihM7 The deadline to submit an interest form is November 7th.
The total amount you will need to send to the Winter Escape PayPal will be $328.00 to be added as a responsible party for a cabin. By submitting the payment to the Winter Escape PayPal you also agree to follow all park policies and regulations. (They can be found at https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/data/trail-guide-westmoreland.pdf)
If you choose to cancel the cabin reservation after Veteran's Day (11/11/20) you will be responsible for an additional $78 in cancelation fees from the park, and you will be responsible for beginning the cancellation process, either via calling the Virginia State Parks Customer Service Center or by contacting David Powers (contact info will be provided once payment is confirmed). If you have any questions, please email winterescape11@gmail.com.
Feel free to explore the different sections of this website to see what previous in-person Winter Escape retreats have looked like in the past! There are plenty of photos, as well as more details about how the weekend usually plays out! Also, for virtual events, keep up with our Facebook groups, or feel free to email winterescape11@gmail.com if you have any other questions!
