Nairobi is a busy, cosmopolitan city with a number of attractions for visitors. You can visit the baby elephants at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and spend a great hour there as the youngsters come back from their morning walk to be fed, hand-feed giraffes at the Giraffe Sanctuary, or visit Karen Blixen's house, made famous by the book and movie 'Out of Africa'. Nairobi Game Park, with the city’s tower blocks as a backdrop, is an under-rated wildlife viewing destination and is one of the best places in Kenya to see Black Rhino.

The National Museum has reopened after an extensive renovation and is well worth a visit, particularly for people interested in the origins of mankind. The museum is a short walk from the City Centre which is always busy during the day and best avoided at night. Nairobi's infamous traffic can make a trip into town a very unpredictable and frustrating journey since it is invariably impossible to predict how long it will take to get there.

Our favourite place to stay in Nairobi is Wildebeest Eco Camp which opened its doors to guests early in 2012. In addition there is a range of other accommodation options to suit all budgets and tastes.

Budget rooms are located outside the main house and have either one double bed or 2 single beds and the use of shared toilets and hot showers. Although bedding is provided you need to bring your own towels. If you like a bit of space and comfort, but don't mind sharing a bathroom with others, then upgrade to a garden tent. These are large walk-in, custom-built permanent-pitch tents with either one double bed or two single beds. All bedding and towels are provided.

If you want that extra bit of privacy and luxury there are huge walk-in custom-built permanent tents with ensuite facilities including hot showers, basins and flush toilets. The safari tents come with their own private verandas where you can sit and watch the garden’s prolific birdlife. However, if you prefer, outside the main house, the high deck also provides a great place to sit and look out over the pond and gardens.
