The core values are the fabric of our organisation; they are the values that guide us in how we show up in the world, how we work with others, and how we drive those interactions. The staff of Wiki In Africa have affirmed the following core values they aspire to in the work we do across Africa and beyond.
To build the sum of all human knowledge and effect meaningful change, we need to think out of the box. External trends demonstrate how the current technological, geopolitical, and social environment has evolved since the creation of the Wikimedia movement and how we must continue to adapt and evolve for our vision to be realised.
In practice, this means
We keep a broad view and open mind on topics and approaches
Our work has a real-world impact beyond Wikimedia, and we do not lose sight of this
We seek not to follow the trends of what others do ... We are not burdened by what others suggest we do… we imagine, design, and test new paths
We look beyond Wikimedia, with curiosity and interest in the Open Knowledge movement
We practice courage when innovating and take responsibility for the results
To build the sum of all human knowledge and effect meaningful change, we need all participants from all cultures, knowledges and spaces, wherever they are. For example, we need Africans to share their knowledge and tell the story of Africa their way. The Wikimedia community must produce content representing all the geographies, cultures, perspectives and diversities. There are several cavernous gaps on the Wikimedia knowledge databases, and we seek to help close those gaps.
In practice, this means:
We work to ensure African cultures are represented on a global scale
We acknowledge and work against persistent biases with regard to gendered, cultural, and linguistic power dynamics.
We work to provide opportunities to the African community to be more visible and empowered within the global Wikimedia verse.
But we also work to help women be better represented online and to get the wiki women participants more visible and empowered within the global Wikimedia movement
We will not shy away from any positive opportunity to help build the open knowledge corpus.
To build the sum of all human knowledge and effect meaningful change is not the task of one person, but many. Activating new participants, developing skills, and retaining and progressing our participants is essential to us. We need to embrace the many generations of Wikimedians, and we want to provide opportunities to others to grow within the Open Knowledge Movement.
In practice, this means :
We build our programs keeping in mind skill-building and capacitation
We support Learning by Doing
What we learn, we relay so that others can benefit from our collective endeavours
We offer opportunities to our partners to increase their skills, whilst collaborating with us
We keep legacy and endurance in mind to create foundations for continuing the work beyond our own direct interventions.
To build the sum of all human knowledge and effect meaningful change, we need to embrace the full depth of human diversity. All human knowledge sits within all humans. Our differences are powerful and require nurturing. We strive to make visible different perspectives that are understood and valued.
In practice, this means :
We deliberately and intentionally build a team with members from diverse countries, cultural backgrounds, mother languages, religions, genders, walks of life, etc.
We are open to collaborations with organisations and individuals across cultural and geographic boundaries, always approaching partnerships with open hearts and minds.
We strive to communicate in multiple languages, focusing on English, French and Arabic—while continuously making space for others, because language is a bridge to understanding.
We are committed to creating safe, respectful, collaborative spaces where everyone feels encouraged to express themselves.
We don’t assume we have all the answers, and approach all projects and engagements with curiosity, compassion, and empathy.
To build the sum of all human knowledge and effect meaningful change, we need to build and retain the trust of our members, partners, readers, and funders. There are many questions and doubts out there about the Open model. We must be able to demonstrate that we are doing a great job, take our responsibilities seriously, and recognise we are accountable for what we do, or fail to do.
In practice, this means
We seek to remain true to and aligned with the mission of the Open Knowledge Movement and not be swayed.
We combat gaps, bias and fake news through research, citations and evidence.
We work in collaboration and in support with other Wikimedia entities and Open Knowledge organisations to build upon each partner's specific strengths. We never operate in a silo and deliberately try to avoid unhealthy and harmful competition.
We consistently involve those affected and engaged in the collective work to ensure that it is relevant and remains so
We strive to do things in the best way possible. This includes careful design, thoughtful implementation, lessons recorded, and learnings put into practic.e
We operate with sustainability in mind, providing tools and programs with long-term impact.
We are as transparent as we technically, ethically and legally can be with regards to our practices.
