Above is a savanna landscape of Oregon white oaks (Quercus garryana) in late winter at Finley National Wildlife Refuge south of Corvallis, Oregon.
In any given year, I host more than a dozen walks and talks in Eugene on a great variety of subjects, most of which pertain in some way to our natural environment The two topics I'm asked most frequently to speak about are trees, and landscaping with native plants—but I have a much more extensive repertoire than that.
Many falls, I lead a two-hour walk called Campus Tree Tour at the University of Oregon to discuss the campus's landscape history and especially its trees.
I have given campus tours for many other groups, too, from the Society of American Foresters to garden clubs, school groups, and Boy Scout troops. More than a few times, local families have hired me—I generally charge $50 per hour, or $100 for the typical two-hour tour—to entertain out-of-town family and other visitors unfamiliar with the Eugene area. Our lovely tree-studded and mostly car-free campus lends itself perfectly to this type of educational outdoor activity. And I never get tired of "showing off" the university campus's ever-changing landscape.
In November 2010, to coincide with the first time my course, The Nature of Eugene (LA 337), was offered, I hosted a two-hour campus tour called The Nature of UO Campus. This tour included a discussion of campus flora, fauna, geology, and architecture, and was repeated in November 2011. Then, in 2013, I taught an all-day class about campus—eight hours long—after which I was quite tired, but boy, did we get to see a lot!
