Wheeling Lodge #9 Members Walk For Cystic Fibrosis
For the past 7 years, Wheeling Lodge #9 has participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides 5K walk. This year the walk was held at the Haller Shelter at Oglebay Park. 13 Lodge Members and their families came out this year to participate. Along with walking, we raised money by holding a spaghetti dinner on March 11. All of the money raised from the spaghetti dinner and through pledges go to our team total for the walk. This year, Wheeling Lodge #9 raised $735 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
The Great Strides Walks are held all over the country in May, on this day there were 8 walks all over the Western Pennsylvania/Northern West Virginia area. In all, these 8 walks raised $496,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time.
In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
This is the 7th year that Wheeling Lodge #9 has participated in the Great Strides walk, and the Lodge is proud to be able to help such a worthy cause.
