Hello and welcome to Weybay WI. We were established in March 2010 by Sandra Jones with a few friends, and since then we have been a very active group.
The Women’s Institute (WI) is a volunteer-led organization that brings women together to build friendships, learn practical and creative skills, and campaign on local and national issues. It offers a supportive network through monthly meetings, workshops, and community events. Weybay adds to that – the requirement to have fun!
MEETINGS AND EVENTS
We meet on the third Tuesday of the month, except in August, at Weymouth Angling Club, Commercial Road, Weymouth, DT4 8NF. Throughout the year we have a variety of speakers on various topics, plus a Country Fayre, Christmas party and, weather permitting, summer beach get togethers. We also organise trips to places of interest as well as other ad hoc events, often suggested by members.
All communication to Weybay WI members is via email, so please ensure that we have up to date contact details for you.
SUB-GROUPS
We have several sub-groups for members to meet up at, which are very popular, including a lunch/supper group, walking group, book club and craft group. If you are interested in joining one or more of these groups, please contact the co-ordinator listed below for further information at weybay-wi@hotmail.co.uk or talk to a committee member at the next meeting.
· Contact: Sue Cox for the Walking Group
· Contact: Sue Baker for the Lunch/Supper Group
· Contact: Gwyneth Brewster for the Book Club
· Contact: Bobs Kershaw for the Craft Group
Members are encouraged to start a group if they have a hobby or interest that they would like to share with other members.
We are part of the Dorset Federation of Women’s Institutes (DFWI), and they hold events, craft sessions, visits and trips away which you are welcome to attend. These are advertised online and in the monthly newsletter which is available at our monthly meetings.
THE WEYBAY WI AND ANGLING CLUB CRAFT GROUP
Hello, I’m Bobs, the Administrator for the Weybay WI and Angling Club Craft Group.
I have been asked to put together a small description of what we do. We meet about twice a month (depending on Bank Holidays and availability) at the Weymouth Angling Society in Commercial Road, usually on a Monday morning. I am a member of the Weybay WI group. We currently have 4 people who offer different craft sessions:
· Katherine O’Donnel-Murphy
· Barbara Stanley
· Edel Cannon
· Bobs Kershaw
We each have different skill sets and can offer a wide range of crafts. We have over 20 different classes, something for all discerning crafters! The type of classes we offer to all members of the groups and public alike, include the following:
· Papercrafts, including card making techniques, iris folding, seasonal and special celebration cards, and decoupage;
· Crochet for beginners, intermediate crochet for those who can already crochet, Squares and circles (includes increasing and decreasing) and other more advanced types of crochet;
· Sewing – various projects eg Sew a felt bird, and English Paper Piecing;
· Needlefelting – 2D and 3D projects including scenes and animals;
· Seasonal crafts including Easter decorations, Christingles, No Sew Xmas baubles, humorous Christmas cards and decoupage a lantern etc
We are currently planning our classes for 2027, some different, as well as the favourites, or a variation on a theme.
If you, or friends and family, are interested in any of our classes then you need to reserve a space, so we can ensure we have sufficient materials on the day. Reserve your space and pay on the day. Cash only. Please see our programme and contact details.
We are open to everyone.
