Charity Donations
Club members raised £400 for Motor Neurone Disease Association at a recent charity evening.
Over the years the club has collected thousands of pounds for charities including the Injured Jockeys Fund, Countryside Learning and Naomi House, thanks to the kind support and collaboration of landowners and club members.
Restoration Work
Last August this battered Georgian spoon was dug up at an Oxfordshire farm. It was then beautifully transformed through the careful restoration work of club expert Jim.
Silver Seal Ring Found in the Sea
I’m very fortunate to be able to detect in the sea in the South of France. I use a Garrett Seahunter MK2, the Seahunter is a pulse induction machine with limited discrimination, but experience means I detect minimal iron. I only dig short crisp signals, hoping for coins or rings. I ignore big, muzzy, overloud signals. They’re mostly iron, although bolts and screws can catch me out. I wear a mask and snorkel and stand within my depth, looking down through the clear water. I use a custom-made, long-handled scoop to recover finds.
On my first outing, back in 2014, this solid silver seal ring came up within 20 minutes; an amazing piece of beginner’s luck. It’s a hefty old ring weighing 23 grams. The lettering of the motto is medieval in style, possibly in Spanish. The ring has a feel of some age; perhaps my oldest ring to date. How it came to be lying 10 metres out from a tourist beach is anyone’s guess. Could it have been an ancient loss or simply a family heirloom, which had slipped from a bather’s finger a few days before?
