My PBL project is Bernoulli ball effect . Daniel Bernoulli was a Swiss physician , doctor , and mathematician he applied math to mechanics in physics to do a discovery. The Bernoulli theorem is the foundation of many engineering applications, such as aircraft wing design. In 1720 Bernoulli developed the theory of watermills, windmills, water propellers. He was the first to distinguish between hydrodynamic pressure. He is one of the earliest writers who made an attempt to devise the kinetic theory of gases and used the idea to explain Boyle s Law. He also worked on elasticity with his close friend Leonhard Euler and helped his friend with the development of the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. Bernoulli principle is of significant use in aerodynamics. In my project i am using a hair dryer and 2 beach balls or light weight balls. The project is to see how the hairdryer can control these 2 balls , combing movement of the hairdryer at different angles. The question is how does a hairdryer control to light weight balls in the air ? By the Bernoulli effect. My experiment is very simple , but can be complex because of equations that physics requires.
I chose this project because i like to work without a step by step, where i can handle how the project goes on. The project seemed simple and interesting , when i see the video on how a hairdryer can control these 2 balls in the air without in complications it seemed like a very easy but competitive project.
I chose the journal project , to record how the project goes
Journal Project for ela component of PBL will show how i did this project and every step taken in the time of the experiment. i would like to show others how physics can help and show a very interesting project.

My Bernoullis principle project is not as complex. I picked this project because i didnt beleive that a hairdryer could control balls at its own rate. The project says that if you move the hairdryer left to right the balls would move the same way. When I first saw the video i thought that the controler with the hair dryer would go out of control and the beach balls would fly in air for a while but not move at the same rate. While doing research I gained information about the physict behind the mind of the bernoulli principle and how he came across this movement in physics. Throughout his research he saw the first ideas of aerodynamics in physics. Bernoulli made it simple and gave me the idea of doing ths project and unerstand the concepts behind the effect of air on a piece of mass. Journal #2 (11/26/2013)
I obtained my background information through research in the internet about the physict Daniel Bernoulli and looked at all his findings on physics. His ideas on physics were focused mainly on physics mixed with math equations.Bernoulli focused on statistics and probablity being applied to fluid mechanics or just mechanics. I researched mainly his idea behind and his research behind Bernoullis principle. Bernoullis principle was published in 1783.The Bernoulli principle was an example of the conservation of energy .This principle stated that there was an increase in the speed of fluid while there was a decrease in pressure in the potential energy. While doing research i came across with an equation which required ; equation of flow of velocity , f=mass x acceleration(newtons 2nd law) , parcel of fluid -adp , and uses time constant.

This demo was not complicated and doesnt require many assistance fom a teacher. My experince requiring assistance was very short because i only needed my teacher to assign and give me materials.I had to figure out through research the background behind this project.I wass assigned to figure on my own , what physics was behind bernoullis principle. Not only was i to find the physics but peform the project on my own.The only assistance that i needed from my physics teacher was the materials to be given to me. I only required small and few materials. However my materials which conist of a large bow dryer , used for gardening, can be dangerous and may require parental watch. That is the only assitance my project would require , because my materials are mostly small and non-dangerous. Journal #4 (11/29/2013)
The procedure for Bernoulli Effect experiment is very simple , but may require some assemble. The Bernoulli Effect underlies the principle of the aerofoil. By encouraging air to flow quickly over the top of the surface .This project can also be demonstrated by holding up two sheets of paper and blowing between them. Instead of moving apart, they are drawn together. The main procedure is , locating a hair dryer or a blow dryer (garden) so that the head is upwards. Later place ball in the air and you will see the hair dryer will take control of the ball , it will start to elevate. You then have to change up the effect by moving the dryer from ne side to anthoer , for example side to side or back and forth. Later if you start to tilt the dryer you will see that the ball will stay in the air stream , and will sort of have no gravity ( floating). A way of changing the procedure up is using balls of diffirent sizes and sizes (watts) of dryers.

An article on the Bernoulli effect done by the Journal of Nuclear Science and Technolgy , stated that wave on a horizontal flow , lying on the x-axis creates a type of lifting force. Howver at the same time you see that the pressure on the object drops. The article talks about an example of everyday life , "The gas phase pressure during slugging was measured in a large -height (0.7) rectangular duct for an air water co-current horizontal two -pahse flow under atomsphic pressure." The article also states that this effect doesnt just apply on objects but can apply with liquid level. Journal #6
