The Scout Motto
What is the first thing a Cub Scout Learns?
Each Scout begins their Scouting adventure by learning the Scout Promise and Scout Law. The Promise is what we make to ourselves and to others as scouts. The Scout Law is the 12 characteristics that define a scout's behavior. Each scout from Lions to Webelos and Arrows, and all the way to Eagle Scouts learn to live by the Scout Law.
Once a new scout has learned the information below they receive the Rank of Bobcat. This is the first rank that a Cub Scout receives. Tradition holds that when a scout is awarded their Bobcat Rank Patch, it must be pinned to the uniform upside down. It is not sewn on or turned right side up, until the scout does a "Good Turn" for someone else. This teaches the unwritten Cub Scout Rule; to Do a Good Turn Daily.

What makes Scouting great?
It's that we only expect the scouts to do their best. It's all you can really ask for and it's all you can really expect. Everyone is different and can do things differently. All a scout needs to worry about is being better than they were yesterday, not being better than someone today.
