1. Dissertation Templates

This page contains templates for use in creating PhD dissertations in Bible and Theology at Wheaton College.

Required: MS Word or OpenOffice

The templates require that you have either Microsoft Word or OpenOffice installed on your computer. OpenOffice is a free and open source office suite comparable to Microsoft Office. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and can be downloaded from www.openoffice.org.

To obtain the template and install it visit the Downloads page on this site. Be sure to choose the template that is appropriate for your word processor.

Recommended: Zotero

Zotero (www.zotero.org) is a popular Firefox (www.mozilla.com/firefox) add-on to capture bibliographic information from web pages and create automatically formatted citations and bibliographies. To make full use of the templates you don't need to use Zotero, but these templates are compatible with Zotero. To download the plugins necessary to integrate MS Word or OpenOffice Writer with Zotero, go to http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_integration.

Recommended: Unicode Fonts

Older Bible software programs used (and in some cases still use) fonts that allow you to type Latin characters and have it look like Greek or Hebrew. This is fine as long as you, and those you work with, have the same fonts. Unicode is not font-specific, so if you use unicode then your documents don't require that you have a certain font installed but rather just have any font with enough glyphs. Some fonts that can be obtained for free for educational purposes include the following:

To type in unicode Greek and Hebrew you need to install keyboard layouts for those languages. This is a platform-specific task, but the Tyndale Unicode Font Kit should help you get started. For more information on unicode fonts, see Tips for Greek and Hebrew Fonts.
