The CBI@WSU "My Ph.D" Skills Assessment Workshop
A foundational goal of CBI@WSU is related to career preparation, including to:
· Provide exposure to various career areas for doctoral students in chemical biology
· Provide exposure to various technical skills used in chemical biology
· Build confidence and prepare doctoral students for multi-disciplinary research teams
· Provide an opportunity for students to articulate their interests, strengths, and weaknesses in
technical and professional skills
To accomplish these career preparation goals, CBI@WSU organizes a "My Ph.D." workshop each Fall with the learning goals as follows:
· Identify and analyze current job adds to generate a list of necessary technical and professional skills for desired career trajectory
· Engage in a structured student-focused, active learning exercise to identify technical and professional skills important for desired career
· Proactively plan their individualized graduate training focused on key desirable technical and professional skills
· Work in small groups with peer mentors to discuss job skills, network, and build a professional community.
To facilitate this "My Ph.D." proactive and career-focused graduate training, CBI@WSU has generated a template with learning objectives and meeting agenda, as well as a skills assessment sheet, used at the workshop. The "My Ph.D." skills assessment sheet is provided here to allow any graduate student with the need and interest to also benefit from proactive and career-focused graduate training.
