Research Excellence as the CBI Platform. The WSU CBI program is built on the research strengths of faculty from five departments and one center. Students from these six units are exposed to a wide range of expertise and skills sets with opportunities for multi-disciplinary training. The faculty research interests span from organic synthesis to models of human disease, which will drive cross-departmental training and collaborative research opportunities available to CBI trainees. The areas of research strength of CBI faculty include analytical and instrumentation, methods data analytics, biophysical characterization, organic synthesis, drug design, cell biology, disease models, and animal models. This variety of expertise results in complementary approaches to biomedical research. One example is the top-down versus bottom-up approaches to epigenetics experimentation among the CBI faculty. From the student perspective, the CBI activities promote new and lasting interactions with CBI faculty beyond their home department, facilitating collaboration and co-mentoring. We have a cohesive group of funded faculty mentors at the forefront of biomedical research with a diversity of interests and skills to confront biological challenges from multiple perspectives and augment student training.
