These are the instructions for one type of Verizon FIOS Internet modem/router/hardware firewall.
Open your Internet browser and type the following in the Internet address blank: 192.168.1.1
That will cause communication with your hardwall firewall. (Some hardware firewalls require a different address.) Then you will be prompted to enter your user ID and password. If you don't know the Internet address or user ID or password, contact your Internet provider for that information, OR if you are using your own Internet router, look within your router documentation (or on the Internet) for the information. You may also need to reset your router so that it will revert to the default values for the user ID and password before you can properly access it.
Then to change the DNS server setting on the Verizon router, (for example to change to DNS addresses of ClearCloud, DNS Advantage, or OpenDNS) do the following:
1. Log into the router (described earlier).
2. From the upper menu icons, click on My Network.
3. From the left side menu icons, click on Network Connections.
4. From the central menu, choose the proper broadband connection and click on the Action icon to the right of the green text “Connected”. For example, you may be using Broadband Connection (Coax). That will bring up a new page in which certain current information will be displayed, including the DNS server addresses that you are using.
5. Toward the bottom of the page, click on the “Settings” button.
6. There is a drop-down list blank which may say “Obtain DNS server address automatically” which is default, or if you want to use OpenDNS, choose “Use the Following DNS Server Addresses”.
7. Type in (for DNS Advantage) 156.154.71.1 for the primary DNS address, or you may prefer 208.67.222.123 for OpenDNS.
8. Type in (for OpenDNS) 208.67.222.123 for secondary DNS address, or you may prefer 208.67.220.123 for OpenDNS.
9. Click “Apply” and wait for application.
10. When the new page comes up, click on “Apply” again.
11. After it has applied the changed settings, click on the “Logout” button to the left.
