Above right, photo of Sgt. Allan R. MacNaught at gravesites of Percy Crosswell and 19-year old Rear Gunner Geoffrey Ralph Johnson, who were shot trying to escape from Stalag Luft VII on April 13, 1945. Allan MacNaught also tried to escape with them but managed to get back to his billet undetected. Less than three weeks later, POWs were force marched from this camp towards Berlin ahead of the advancing Russian Army.

Below, photo of Flight Sergeant Leslie Howard Stevenson (R171883), an Air Gunner, via Canadian Virtual War Memorial website. He was the son of Homer and Ruby Stevenson of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. See Addendum for more about Flt. Sgt. Stevenson and a photograph of his funeral at Stalag Luft VII.
Leslie Howard Stevenson was killed by a German guard while attempting to escape from Stalag Luft VII, Bankau on December 27, 1944. He was in the same "combine" as Sgt. Robert Toomey.
This camp was abandoned less than a month later when the prisoners started out in a winter blizzard, walking over 227 kilometres to escape ahead of the advancing Russian Army... Claude Lafleur.]
