Since we now have confirming ydna tests from three well-researched kits, I feel this line is legitimately "Walter Phelps" and was from Maryland. There are also other independently tested men whose surname is Phelps and match very well. At this point, we can say the YDNA of this Walter line is proven. The lineage of kit 162307 was professionally prepared by Mr. Robert Barnes, a very respected professional Maryland genealogist and writer. See the papers in the downloadable files in Resources for Research, BarnesWalterPhelps, Colonial Families of AA Co. Jan 2000, and GilesWalterPhelps by Louis Giles. A much fuller genealogy based on Barnes' paper, with more current research by D. Phelps, can be seen in the file Descendants of Walter of Anne Arundel b1639 Phelps, Sr is available at Resources for Research.
Recently Big Y tests have revealed much better insight into relationships. The current known haplogroup snp tree is as observed at : www.familytreedna.com/public/y-dna-haplotree/R;name=R-FTB66101

| 4. Possibly Isaiah Phelps (see the below note) b. 23 March 1728, in 1776 Anne Arundel parish census Note: D. Phelps offers this consideration: Isaiah Phelps was listed in the 1776 Census of All Hallows Church with 1 white male, 3 white females and 3 white children. In Barnes 1993 article he concludes that Isaiah was “possibly the father of Ezekiel Phelps… and that “He is placed as the father of Ezekiel Phelps because he is the only Phelps listed in the 1776 census of Anne Arundel Co having children not accounted for, and because Ezekiel named one of his children Walter Watkins Phelps. The Walter could have been for Ezekiel's grandfather Walter.” The genealogy of this line was developed subsequently to the report.
