While Phelps and Servin's two volumes have been invaluable for Phelps researchers, it had sometimes frustrated the researchers because some of it was not making any sense. As a result, these researchers turned to yDNA testing to sift and sort the Phelps lines.
After several years of yDNA testing, It is now clear that the three Phelps lines were mixed up and inserted in William Phelps of CT's family:
William Phelps of Windsor, CT
Walter Phelps of Arundel Anne Co., MD
John Phelps, d. 1747 Goochland Co., VA
Note that there is a huge section for William's family in Phelps and Servin while there is no section for Walter Phelps of Maryland family and John Phelps of Goochland Co., VA. Caution should be taken when consulting "Phelps Family in America"s two volumes especially in and around the region of Virginia (West Virginia), Kentucky, and Ohio.
Thanks to yDNA testing, it was discovered that the three John Phelps that were often confused and lumped together. They were not related to each other. Marilyn Brien composed a document in her attempt to point out the errors in several pages in Phelps and Servin and made suggestions. Please read this carefully. This document "Errors and Corretions in Phelps and Servin" is attached below.
(Dorothy Phelps Gellai will need to verify this on her Wm Phelps line, and Mary Galgan's group to verify this too (John Phelps of Goochland Co, VA line and Walter Phelps group need to verify the Walter Phelps line as well.)
Another example is that the family of Richard Jones/John Phelps #4734 (and along with about 3 pages) seemed to be stashed within William Phelps of Windor CT's family. The yDNA clearly points out this glaring error.
