Kathy Renfrew Early Childhood & Elementary Education Science Service Award

Gail Hall Secondary Education Science Service Award

The Vermont Science Teaching Association recognizes exceptional science education by awarding two educators in Vermont that have served as role models in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Secondary Education. These two individuals not only personify excellence within the classroom, but also play roles in moving science education forward in their communities and state.

The criteria for the Kathy Renfrew Early Childhood and Elementary Education Science Service Award and the Gail Hall Secondary Education Science Service Award require that the candidate:

  • Have a minimum of three years in the classroom

  • Demonstrates innovative teaching practices that supports personalized STEM learning

  • Demonstrates three dimensional instruction that supports all learners

  • Demonstrates integration of transferable skills into classroom assessments

  • Is an active leader in their school community/district

Applications must include: 1) Nominating letter that supports the candidate meets the required criteria, 2) Letter of Recommendation, 3) Resume, and 4) Teaching Philosophy (one page). Completed applications should be sent to the VSTA board at vstamail@gmail.com and must be received by February 25, 2022. Awards include monetary gift ($250), commemorative certificate, and free VSTA membership. Awards will be presented at Award Gala in Fall 2022.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science educator may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Since 1983, more than 5,000 teachers have been recognized for their contributions to mathematics and science education. Up to 108 awardees may be recognized each year.

Presidential Awardees receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States; a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities; and a $10,000 award from NSF. They also join a network of award-winning teachers from across the country.
