Creating good paying jobs in this city will require working harder and smarter. Silicone valley or steel factories are not coming to save us. We will need to do it ourselves. First, a clean bright city with working infrastructure - that's jobs!
We need to make the city more livable & make an environment that will attract investors & professionals that will bring good opportunities. Making this city more livable includes initiatives such as:
better governance
accountability and transparency
debt-reduction
significant repair to infrastructure
investment in arts & culture
preservation of heritage assets
more effective modern transit
building smart streets (streets made with vehicles, buses, bicycles and pedestrians in-mind)
Light Rapid Transit (LRT)
affordable housing
homeless shelters, transitional housing, emergency psychiatric services
We will need to strike a balance between outside investment (too much of which has driven-up prices and real estate too fast) & a smarter locally-driven economy.
Local initiatives & job opportunities exist in:
growing tourism
expanding the food industries
more business parks
assisting in setting-up a science park
investment in arts & culture
liberlising the government constraints on local business expansions
tax incentives for new businesses
infrastructure improvement work
new capital projects
establishing a film commission
In the short-term, we could consider partnering more with Hamilton to bridge the gap and broaden regional job opportunities. Hamilton is a closer commute and shares a lot of the same issues and circumstances as we do in-comparison to Toronto.
