Chronic Pain Management

My body hurts. Why do I need therapy?

Psychological factors (stress, relationship conflict, anxiety, depression, anger, etc) are important contributors to pain , as negative experiences not only compromise the body's ability to fight illness and heal injuries but also the individual's ability to cope. As a result, many notice changes in their mood, sleep, energy, concentration, and quality of life in addition to increased levels of pain. Many times, there is a vicious cycle in which chronic pain causes stress and then stress causes more pain.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY is typically recommended in combination with biofeedback treatments to address the mind-body aspect of illness. CBT will help address any maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are currently contributing to pain and mental health concerns (sleep, mood, relationship concerns).

CBT also addresses "triggers" that increase pain, stress management, problem solving, anger management (when appropriate), coping skills, and relaxation. There are many benefits to this treatment regimen, including reduced symptoms, greater sense of control, improved coping, increased quality of life, and decreased distress.
