how to make a Native American 'Love' or courting flute from bamboo.
This is a type of fipple flute with a large pre-loading airchamber that gives a very mellow sound. I use a 5 hole tuning following information from an article by Steve Beyer on the Native American Flute Forum for the pentatonic scales to use. I usually make six holes to get two of the traditional petatonic five hole tunings in one flute.
I also make a more traditional 6 hole flute which requires 'fork-fingering' to play the pentatonic scale. I modify the hole placement however to place the holes on western notes so the flute can be easily played with other instruments.
Below is a link to an Acrobat file with instructions in making a Native American flute from bamboo. It includes instructions on tuning for any scale you would like.

It is version 1.23 (dated 27Sept2004) of the NAFlutomat web interface written by Edward Kort The majority of equations used in NAFlutomat are based on a series of flute theory books (or monographs) written by Lew Paxton Price. He has written flute design software of his own, but bears no responsibility for any aspect of NAFlutomat
