Experience Description: Horseability is an equine center designed to provide people with therapy through the horses. They have various programs, two of the biggest being the veteran program and providing individuals with special needs horseback riding lessons or hippotherapy. As a volunteer there, I help prepare the horses for their riders by grooming and tacking the horses. I also am an integral part of the lesson, serving as a sidewalker for the individual riding. This means that I walk closely beside them, or hold on to their leg depending on the person, to help prevent them from falling off. I also communicate between them and the instructor to keep the rider attentive and focused and help them make small corrections or inform the instructor if something is not right.
