Experience Description: This summer, I will be working at All Creatures Veterinary Services, where I will be a kennel attendant. I will be caring for and walking ill pets or pets that are being boarded there. When I am not working, I will be shadowing Dr. Gelfand. I hope to learn a lot more about being a veterinarian for small animals and learn more about specific ailments they treat daily as well as how to conduct routine check up visits. All Creatures Veterinary Services serves the typically thought of household pets, such as cats and dogs, in addition to avians and exotics, so working there and shadowing there will provide me with an excellent, fairly well-rounded foundation. The clinic offers the latest technology and care as well as large rooms for boarding and “kitty condos”.
Most Meaningful: While I haven’t completed this experience yet, I believe it will be one of my most meaningful experiences. This is because it will be my first experience with shadowing a veterinarian and getting more of an inside look as to what being a veterinarian is actually like. Also, I think it will be valuable to learn more about small animals, such as cats and dogs, since most of my previous volunteer experiences with animals have been centered around horses. I think this experience will also be meaningful to be able to talk to multiple veterinarians about their experiences in veterinary school and what they looked for when applying as well as how they built a competitive application. I think making connections among those veterinarians will be a great tool for my future. Since they service so many different kinds of animals and have veterinarians from a variety of backgrounds, I expect to learn a lot from this opportunity. I also look forward to getting to witness more medicinal aspects of animal care and actual veterinarian tasks since I haven't really been immersed in it before.
