Modern Hybrids
The Blue Bell is a placid bird that lays around 260 brown eggs a year.
Black Rock The Black Rock is an inquisitive bird and has a beautiful iridescent plumage. It is a very hardy bird, bred in the North, laying around 300 good sized brown eggs in her first year.
The Black Star has exotic origins and lays up to 300 brown eggs a year. She comes in an attractive spectrum of colours from beetle green to jet black with an orange speckled breast and neck. She is a reliable bird and very hardy. Although tough, she is very placid and an ideal addition to the family.
Magpie - A new large hybrid, mostly black, often with a white laced breast. Bred for the free range market, laying about 230 brown eggs per year.
Rangers - This is a hardy bird and is the most productive, the friendliest, and easiest to handle of the hybrids. Around 330 brown eggs per year.
Cheshire Blue - A cross between a Legbar hen and a White Leghorn. Lots of medium sized blue eggs. Comes either white with a few blue patches or a pattern of browns like her mother. ( Now surpassed in sales by the Devon Blue, also a blue egg layer, so we rarely have them theses days).
The Speckled Star is an attractive, placid and inquisitive bird that produces up to 250 brown eggs in the first year. It is a big bird and very friendly.
Sussex is a small elegant bird that can lay up to 320 cream coloured eggs a year. Very tame and a good companion. Soon becomes part of the family.
White Leghorn -- This is a traditional Spanish breed. It is a smaller lighter bird but an excellent layer of white eggs right throughout the winter. This breed likes to perch high.
Devon Blue - a peach coloured heavy bird with a bonnet or small cap, laying around 260 blue eggs.
Tutti Frutti - available in a wide range of colours, laying eggs which may be blue, green or pink.
Bantams - Available from April - July
Polish - bantam birds with a pom-pom head in a range of colours, laying small white eggs. Gentle birds and good for children.
Silkies - named for their atypically fluffy plumage, silkies lay only about 3 small white eggs a week. They are very broody and will happily sit eggs from any other hen. Very friendly and easy birds.
