On Saturday morning the UUCA group organizes at least two hikes: a "big" hike and a "fun" hike. Retreat participants are welcome to join these hikes, organize their own hikes, explore the campground or the Big Meadows Visitor Center, or simply relax at the campsite for the morning!

The "big hike" in 2019 was the Rose River Falls trail, led by the Pattersons. The "big" hike is for kids (and adults!) who can walk/hike 5 miles, which probably translates into a minimum age of about 5 (or a parent who can carry their child on their shoulders if the child gets tired).
9:30 am: Meet at E-175 in Big Meadows campground, which is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail. Hike north on the AT to the Red gate/Rose River Fire Trail, about 1.2 miles. Turn right onto the fire road and cross Skyline drive on the fire road. Just after crossing Skyline drive, turn left onto the Rose River Falls trail. Follow the trail to the Falls, about 1.3 miles. After viewing the Falls, we will return to the campground via the same route. We will eat lunch and play in the water along the Rose River (lots of flat, calm areas to play in) after viewing the falls. Total distance for the hike is 5 miles. Depending on how long we play in the water on the way back, we anticipate returning to the campground at 2:30 pm.
Please bring ample water (1 liter per person minimum), a pack lunch, and snacks for this hike. If you or your kids plan to play in the water, water shoes and/or a bathing suit may be helpful. Small nets and frisbees for catching and viewing water critters like crayfish and salamanders are also fun to have. The Pattersons will bring a first aid kit.

The "fun" hike in 2019 was the Stony Man Trail. The "fun" hike is a little bit shorter, easier hike, appropriate for those with smaller kids, or people who just aren't up for the "big" hike. Stony Man Trail is a 1.5 mile loop hike up a gentle incline to some fantastic views of the Shenandoah Valley. The Ohlandts led this hike-- we have done this hike several times with small children!
You will need to drive to the Stony Man parking area at mile 41.7. Meet at the parking area at 10am, or at campsite B107 at 9:30am if you want to caravan with us. Pack water, apply sunscreen, and bring a snack or maybe even lunch if you eat early!
