Day 5 - Thursday, September 21, 2017
Nearly all of Day 5 will be spent within Zion National Park main canyon area riding the park shuttle and hiking within the park. There are a variety of recommended hikes available to consider, from strenuous all day hikes, to shorter easier hikes depending upon our hiking abilities and how much time we have. Click HERE to view or download a pdf file of many of the hiking trails within the Park.
The Main Canyon area, where we will be spending the majority of our time, has some great suggested hikes for the more adventurous include Angels Landing, Hidden Canyon, Observation Point, and The Virgin Narrows. For those seeking more easy to moderate hikes, the Emerald Pools (Lower, Middle, and Upper), The Kayenta Trail, The Grotto Trail, The Riverside Walk, and Weeping Rock hikes are options to consider.
If you don't want to experience some of the more strenuous hikes you can also see some of the sites on a horseback tour within the Park. One and three hour tours are available.
Anticipating a full day of hiking means we will either have to head back to Springdale for lunch, eat at the Red Rock Grill (located at the Zion Lodge within the Park) or the nearby Castle Dome Cafe, or bring some food with us for a midday picnic. The visitors center and a few of the trailheads (Zion Lodge, Grotto, and the Temple of Sinawava) have drinking water available. It is a good idea to carry at least one to two liters of water to keep you hydrated and safe depending upon the hike you are doing. You may also need to bring some snacks along to help with your energy levels.
After a full day of hiking we would get on our motorcycles near sunset and have the opportunity to view this most scenic road again as we ride out of the Park through the Upper East Canyon area (stopping at the Canyon Overlook Trail if we were unable to find parking there on Day 4). We then continue our journey and travel southeast on Hwy 89 to Kanab, Utah for more reasonable lodging and to cut an hour from our next days ride.
