Winter Gear Sale!

Do your kids have winter gear or running shoes that they’ve outgrown? Of course they do! Does that mean that they need new stuff (again??!!) Of course it does. Good news: the UHE PAC is planning a winter gear & running shoes sale.

Here’s how it works: Drop off your gently used kids’ winter gear (boots, mitts, hats, rain pants, jackets, etc.) and running shoes at UHE from September 20-24th (bins will be available at the end of the rainbow walkway and outside the front office). Parent volunteers will organize the donated items by size and price them.

The event will take place outside of the school (to be COVID safe) and will be rain or shine. All proceeds will support PAC initiatives. Any items that are not sold will be donated to a local charity. If you are interested in volunteering for this event and/or if you have a tent or canopy we can use on September 25th (in case of rain), please email us at universityhighlands.pac@burnabyschools.ca

Hot Lunch

We are happy to be able to continue to offer hot lunch this school year and grateful to Principal Harding for his support to make this happen. Learn more here.

We're looking for a new Treasurer

We would like to announce that Clea Moray has resigned from the Treasurer position. Clea has been on the executive since April 2019 and has been a tremendous source of information and support for the current PAC co-chairs. Thank you for everything Clea! We are looking for someone to step into the Treasurer role. The full Treasurer job description can be found under the Constitution and Bylaw section of the UHE PAC website. But on a high level, the PAC Treasurer is responsible for ensuring PAC funds are properly accounted for, maintaining the books and other financial records, drafting the annual budget, creating monthly and annual financial reports, and reporting on PAC finances at each PAC meeting. Feel free to email us at universityhighlands.pac@burnabyschools.ca if you have questions about joining the exec.

2021/2022 PAC Executive

The 2021/2022 Executive is looking forward to supporting UHE and the greater community. Take a moment to get to know a little bit more about your Executive by looking through the bios below.

2021-2022 University Highlands Elementary PAC Executive

Co-Chairs: Joyce Chow & Julia Lane

My name is Joyce and I am a mom of 2 active boys. Colin is 5.5 and is currently in Ms. Street's Kindergarten class and my younger one Carter is 3 and is attending UCC South. Our family has been part of the Univercity community for the last 5 years and we love it! I really feel that the Univercity community is one that takes care of one another. Professionally, I am in Human Resources management for a local cyber security company called Fortinet. This is my first year joining the PAC committee along with my co-chair Julia, we are excited to learn from our amazing team of current and former PAC execs and to contribute to the University Highland Community.

My name is Julia and my child is Felix, in Ms. Street's kindergarten class (Div. 13). I am a white settler living on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Wau-Tuth Peoples. I work in the Student Learning Commons in the Library at SFU where my focus is on supporting undergraduate student writers. One of the major aspects of my work has become bringing antiracist approaches into our learning and writing support services.

I did my PhD in Arts Education at SFU, with a focus on clowning as a broadly transferrable performance tradition. My master's degree is from Trent University in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies. My undergraduate degree is from York University in theatre studies with a specialization in collective creation.

I look forward to serving in the PAC co-chair role alongside Joyce and to focusing on how our community can continue to come together and take care of one another, even in these challenging times.

Past Chair: Sarah Borsa

My name is Sarah Borsa (she/her) and I’m a mother of two boys at University Highlands. I’m a full time mum, full-time ER nurse, part-time student, and past chair of UHE PAC. My family has been living on the mountain for 13 years and we absolutely love the community and fresh mountain air.

I love being involved with school activities and building community with families. You’ll find me hanging out at the park, gardening or biking with my boys. Please approach me anytime with PAC related questions - or just to say hi!

Secretary: Kelsey Richards

My name is Kelsey. My daughter Makayla attends UHE in Ms. Kim’s Grade 1/2 class and my son Liam attends the UniverCity Childcare Centre. Our family lives in UniverCity. When we aren’t in school/work you’ll likely find us at the playground, riding our mountain bikes or walking the trails with our puppy Chilco. I work for the Centre for Child Development in Surrey/Langley as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. I have enjoyed working with the PAC on initiatives that support our school and community. I’m looking forward to a great year!

Treasurer: Clea Moray

My name is Clea, and I have a daughter in Grade 3 and a son in Grade 1. We've lived on the mountain for 8 years, and we love the natural spaces, clean air and friendly community that UniverCity offers. This is my third year volunteering with the PAC, and in addition to being the Treasurer I enjoy working with the school's gardening committee and helping at school events. The perspective and skills I contribute are shaped by my experience working in ecology, community engagement, and project management. I'm grateful for the opportunity the PAC has given me to meet so many of the wonderful people in our community, and I look forward to getting to know more UHE families this year!

DPAC: Nisa Onsel & Jessica Arratia

My name is Nisa. I am one of the new District PAC representatives of UHE. My older son Alper is in UHE at fifth grade, and Mete, who is 3 years old, is in SFU Childcare Center. We have been living in UniverCity for more than 2 years, and we have loved living here since our first day. I enjoy supporting the activities at school as well as building friendships around our kids. I am a data scientist and system dynamics modeller, specialized in health care systems modeling and policy analysis. I enjoy cooking, hosting gatherings, and exploring the outdoors in BC. Happy to be of service in the coming school year.

Hello! I am one of the new District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) representatives for UHE. My name is Jess, and my kids are Stella (in grade 6 with Ms. Wilke/McGivern), Theo (in grade 3 with Ms. Dixon/McGivern), and Oscar (joining UHE in 2022). Our family has loved being a part of UHE and this awesome community up on the mountain. When I’m not with my kiddos, I work at SFU in the Business Co-op program where I work with students and create connections with employers and faculty for experiential learning. I am also a PAC newbie and am looking forward to getting more involved in the school community.

Member at large: Kristina Lebed

My name is Kristina Lebed. We moved to UniverCity 3 years ago and love absolutely everything about it. I have two daughters one of whom started Kindergarten last year.

Aside from raising tiny humans, I am also a professional fundraiser currently working at BCIT on their campus redevelopment campaign. I have a Bachelors degree in English Literature from UBC.

I am a Russian Gypsy by birth and my husband is Ukranian. We moved to Canada when we were kids and we love the cultural diversity of our community.

I am passionate about getting kids engaged in philanthropy, diversity and inclusion.

Our favourite hang out spots on the mountain are the playgrounds, AQ Pond, hiking trails and of course the beautiful Burnaby Mountain Park.
