For more than 20 years, the Matrix approach shaped the educational approach in the CUS Guide to Curriculum Development. In 2020 - 2023 CUS adopted the Knowing-Loving-Serving paradigm as a shift from Matrix Statements to an education approach with a greater emphasis on the learner's spiritual formation. The teaching prompts were intended to promote curricular goals to increase the learner's knowledge of God, self, and others as well as an increase in love for and service to God, self, and others. In 2024, following the CUS annual meeting, the CUS Executive Committee made a change in direction. While the Knowing-Loving-Serving paradigm was important groundwork for a change in its curricular template, CUS took a bold step in adopting an even more substantial change to the instructional design of the Guide to Lesson. During the 2024 annual meeting, the keynote speaker, Dr. Becky Davis of Union Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina, introduced Propositional Teaching which resonated with the CUS emphasis on biblical teaching for faith formation. CUS recognized that this would provide publishing partners the fresh tool kit they needed for developing their Christian education resources. The new methodology is being incorporated into Cycle 25 (Fall 2026-Summer 2032) materials through a gradual development process as we learn, grow, and adapt in ways that best serve CUS and our partners in the ministry of Christian education publishing.
