HOME DAILY BIBLE READING
GUIDELINES FOR REVIEW
PLEASE NOTE AS OF 2023 we are using the NRSVue (updated edition). It is available online at BibleGateway:
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%201&version=NRSVUE
Please reference NRSVue when reviewing the selected Scriptures. The texts for the HDBR should reflect language consistent with the NRSVue.
The HDBR shall consist of 5 to 15 verses of Scripture for each day of the year, selected to supplement or support the Uniform lessons of the following Sunday, with proper attention to any special seasonal emphasis, such as Christmas.
They are intended for use by the family group and should be selected because they support home Christian nurture.
Except in unusual circumstances the reading shall consist of a single passage and consecutive verses.
An effort shall be made to provide for continuity between the readings for the week.
To this end the Background Scripture shall be a primary source for the selection of the readings, and use can also be made of the passage chosen for the Devotional Reading or of a passage that contains the Key Verse.
The same passage shall not be used more than once in six months.
The title for each day shall not exceed six words. It shall seek to make clear how the reading relates to the theme of the Sunday Session, so that it can help give the readers clues as to what they should be looking for as they read.
When Scripture is quoted in the title, the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition of the Bible (NRSVue) shall be used.
The reading shall be listed for each week beginning with Monday and closing with Sunday, the day of the Session to which the readings are related, in the form set forth in the CUS Handbook.
The reading shall include: date, day (initial) Bible reference, title. For example: Jan. 17. T. Acts 6:8-15. Mighty in Witness
