Our History

The UMBC Club Tennis Team was created by Alex Chan in the Spring of 2005. Alex thought that the intramural tennis tournament was not enough tennis, because it only took up one weekend per semester. After consulting other tennis players, he decided that creating a club team for tennis could not only be fun, but also successful. After a semester, the Club Tennis Team became official in the fall of 2005. Fall of '05 was also when the new team first started to play competitively, with matches against Johns Hopkins and Loyola. Later in the fall, a sponsorship with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) provided the new team with shirts, balls, and a ball hopper, as well as paying for the enterance fee and lodging for the team's first tournament: The Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championships, sponsored by the USTA and held at Mary Washington University, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After fighting through tough matches (and eventually scoring wins against Mary Washington and Johns Hopkins), UMBC Club Tennis placed 5th overall, placing best out of all the teams from Maryland. Not bad for a first year!
