It is the policy of Union Hospital, Inc., to maintain a drug-free workplace in compliance with the spirit and intent
of the federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. The use of controlled substances is inconsistent with the behavior
expected of employees; subjects employees, patients and visitors to our facility to unacceptable safety and health
risks; and undermines the Hospital's ability to operate effectively and efficiently and to carry out its mission.
Effective immediately, all employees are absolutely prohibited from unlawfully manufacturing, distributing,
dispensing, possessing, selling or using controlled substances in the workplace or while engaged in business for the
Hospital off premises. Such conduct is also prohibited during nonworking time to the extent that in the opinion of the
Hospital it impairs an employee's ability to perform on the job or threatens the reputation or integrity of the
Hospital.
To educate employees on the dangers of drug abuse, Union Hospital has established a drug-free awareness
program. Periodically, employees will be required to attend training sessions at which the dangers of drug abuse, the
Hospital's policy regarding drugs, the availability of counseling and the Hospital's Employee Assistance Program will
be discussed.
Any employee convicted of violating a criminal drug statute must inform Union Hospital of such conviction
(including pleas of guilty and nolo contendere) within five days of the conviction occurring. Failure to so inform
the Hospital subjects the employee to disciplinary action up to and including termination for the first offense.
Union Hospital reserves the right to offer employees convicted of violating a criminal drug statute in the
workplace participation in an approved rehabilitation or drug-abuse assistance program as an alternative to
discipline. If such a program is offered and accepted by the employee, then the employee must satisfactorily
participate in the program as well as maintaining a satisfactory work performance as a condition of
continued employment.
All employees are asked to acknowledge that they have read the above policy and agree to abide by it in all
respects. By law, this acknowledgment and agreement are required of you as a condition of continued employment.
Please refer any questions on the above policy to your supervisor or the Human Resources Department.
