Tuesday, October 1, 2024 -  Pass Mountain Trail to AT and on To avoid any stream crossings we will stay on AT after going up the Pass Mtn.Trail

          From the Pass Mountain Trail parking area on Rt. 211 (38.668787, -78.290252), about a mile past the Buck Hollow parking area, we will cross the road and take the Pass Mountain Trail to AT. Then we will go north on AT to the top of the ridge above Elkwallow gap.(about 1.5 mi past Thornton River Trail) and return back to the start..About 14 miles and 3,000 elevation. Those wanting a longer hike can go on to Elkwallow before turning back.

Tuesday September 24, 2024 - AT From Liberty Hill Ln to Manassas Gap and Back.- S at Liberty Hill Lane Trailhead (Rt 17/50) (39.018174, -77.968487)  we will go up to the At and south to Manassas Gap Shelter and back.About 16 miles with 3000 ft. of ascent. (PATC Map 8)

Tuesday September 17, 2024 - Buck Ridge to Sam's Ridge and back - (PATC Map 10) Starting at the Buck Ridge trailhead parking on Rt 211 near the SNP entrance, we will hike Buck Ridge, Hazel Mtn., White Rocks, Hazel River and Sam’s Ridge trails. Then return via Hazel Mtn. and Buck Hollow trails. This is about 16 miles and around 3800 feet of ascent.

Tuesday September 10, 2024 - Dickey Ridge & AT out & back - PATC map 9) From the north entrance of SNP and hike to the Dickey Ridge Trail and Appalachian Trail to the intersection at (Carson Mountain) where we will have lunch, then return back on the DRT to the entrance of SNP.  Approximately 20 miles and 2500 feet elevation.

Tuesday September 3, 2024 - Whiteoak Canyon and Hawksbill Mountain. (PATC Map 10) We will start at the Whiteoak Canyon Parking lot off Rte 600 and take the Whiteoak Canyon Trail to the AT and head south to the Salamander trail and  to the top of Hawksbill. We go down the Hawksbill Trail and Cedar Run Trail back to the parking lot.(16 miles with 3,500 feet of elevation gain). Leader: Gene Whitaker, genewhit@gmail.com      


Tuesday, August 27, 2024 -  Bull Run Regional Park - BROT Soccer field to the north and return. The altitude gain should injure nobody, that includes me.

Tuesday, August 20, 2024 - Catoctin Double Loop. Start locale: NPS Catoctin Mtn. Visitor Center Main (asphalt/no fees) Parking Lot: (39.633864, -77.449878) 14707 Park Central Road, Thurmont, MD 21788

     Route: The Extended Loop Trail, 9.9 miles/1,739’ elevation. Then, briefly, along Foxville Rd. and onto Cunningham Falls State Park’s Cat Rock (out and back)Yellow Trail segment for an additional 7.1 miles/1000’ elevation. A total 17 miles/2,740’ elevation.  Especially if it is in the high 90s there is an option to just do the first loop, and cool off in the lake afterwards.

Tuesday, August 13, 2024 -  Robertson, Stony Man, Corbin Mtn. From Old Rag Parking Lot., take  Weakley  Hollow Fire Road to Robertson Mt Trail then ascend to Stony Man peak for lunch. Return via Old Rag Fire Road,

Corbin Mt. and Nicholson Trails. 15.5 miles and 3900 ft ascent.

Tuesday, August 6, 2024 -  Bull Run - Occoquan Trail out-and-back . It will be an out and back starting at US 28 to a point past Bull Run Marina.  Total distance is just under 21 miles with a 3,000 ft. elevation gain.  The elevation gain is from a lot of up and down rather than the big climbs we get in SNP so it's not difficult.

Tuesday, July 30, 2024 - Washington Monument State Park - (PATC Map 5) Starting from the Old South Mountain Inn parking lot and the AT, we will proceed North through to Washington Monument State Park for approximately 8.2 miles and then return (16.5 miles & 3200' elevation gain).

Tuesday, July 23, 2024 - Piney Ridge–AT–Hull School Trail Loop -- (PATC Map 9) Starting at the Keyser Run Fire Road at the end of VA614, we’ll take the Hull School Trail to the Piney Branch Trail and climb to the Appalachian Trail turning left on the Byrd’s Nest 4 trail to Beahm’s Gap.  Return via the Hull School Trail and Kiser Run Road to parking. Approximately 17 miles with 4,430 ’ elevation gain.

Tuesday, July 16, 2024 - Skyland Loop Around - We will start our hike at The Pinnacles picnic area, on the AT and Skyline Drive Drive. Taking the AT, we will quickly cross the Drive and turn onto the Corbin Cabin Cutoff Trail, transition to the Indian Run Trail, the Corbin Mt. Trail, Old Rag Fire Road, a brief section of the Limberlost Trail, Crescent Run Trail, and then the AT again.  After Skyland we can go back via either the Passamaquoddy Trail/AT or continue straight on the AT until we get back to the Pinnacles. (15 miles, 3345 feet elevation)

Tuesday, July 2, 2024 - Elkwallow, Pine Knob, Neighbor Mt, Elkwallow - Northern District, Shenandoah NP (PATC Map 9):  Start at Elkwallow picnic area to the AT, south to Neighbor Mountain Trail, North on Knob Mountain Trail to the Knob Mountain cutoff and back to Elkwallow.  Approximately 15 miles with 3,850 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday, June 25, 2024 - AT from Thornton to Little Stoney Man and Back. From Panorama Parking Lot, we head south on the Appalachian Trail to Mary's Rock and then continue south on the AT to Pinnacles Picnic Area. There are restrooms here. The hike continues south along the AT until we reach Little Stony Man. We’ll have lunch at Little Stony Man and then retrace our steps along the AT back to the parking lot. This is an out and back completely on the AT except for the short trail up to Mary’s Rock. Total distance is about 16 miles with about 4,100’ of elevation gain.

Tuesday, June 11, 2024 -  15th Annual Big Meadows Luncheon with Rose River Splash Down.  Central District SNP.  From the Rose River trailhead, we will ascend the Rapidan Fire Road for a leisurely lunch at Big Meadows Lodge.  After lunch we will descend the Rose River Fire Road for a splashdown in the Rose River at the trailhead; about 16 miles with 2600 feet of ascent.  For the more vigorously inclined there is an option to visit President Hoover’s Rapidan Camp before lunch; about 18 miles with 3000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday, June 4, 2024 - North on AT through Washington Monument State Park (WMSP) (PATC Map 5)- We will meet in the parking lot adjacent to the Old South Mountain Inn parking lot - We will proceed north on the AT for about 1 3/4 miles before we pass the first monument in the country completed and dedicated to the father of our country, George Washington, in 1827. At the Pogo Memorial Campsite we will have lunch and then return to the start. (17 miles and 3200 elevation gain)

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - (as hiked) Up Graves Mill Trail, Rapidan Camp and Back on Jones Mtn. Trail -  From the Parking area at the end of 662, 38.437128, -78.367081,  We took the Graves Mill Trail to Rapidan Fire Rd. to Rapidan Camp. Then the Laurel Prong Trail, left on Cat Knob Trail and down Jones Mountain, Staunton River and Graves Mill trails parking area. (15 miles and 3200 elevation)

Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - Leader - Buzzard Rock (PATC Map G). Starting at the Buzzard Rock trailhead on Route 619 (Mountain Road), we will take the Buzzard Rock Trail to Shawl Gap, continue straight on the Massanutten Trail, turn right on the Sherman Gap Trail, then right on the Botts Trail to the Elizabeth Furnace picnic area for lunch. After lunch, we will return to Shawl Gap via the Tuscarora Trail, and take the Buzzard Rock trail back to the trailhead. About 16 miles with 3000 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday, May14, 2024 - Mt Marshall Circuit from SNP Boundary near Washington, VA - Parking at the end of VA Rt 625, (38.748378, -78.194069) we’ll ascend the Mt Marshall Trail for approx. 6 miles to a brief section of SLD then on to Jenkins Gap.  From here we follow the AT south over North Marshall (possible lunch spot here) to Gravel Springs Gap then left onto the Bluff Trail to Mt Marshall Trail and complete the loop back to the trail head. Distance is approximately 17 miles with 3,000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday, May 7, 2024 –Buck Ridge to Sams Ridge and back - (PATC Map 10) Starting at the Buck Ridge trailhead parking on Rt 211 near the SNP entrance, we will hike Buck Ridge, Hazel Mtn., White Rocks, Hazel River and Sam’s Ridge trails. Then return via Hazel Mtn. and Buck Hollow trails. This is about 16 miles and around 3800 feet of ascent. Bed prepared for numerous stream crossings along the Hazel River trail.

Tuesday, April 30, 2024 - Tuesday, April 30, 2024 – Anacostia Starting at the Minnesota Ave Metro Station, we will hike a portion of the Eastern Line of Civil War Defenses of Washington and return via the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail.  About 15 miles with 1000 feet of ascent.

  Tuesday, April 23, 2024 - AT Linden north to Sky Meadows and Back - (PATC Map 8) We will meet at 8:00am for an out and back along the AT starting at the parking lot on VA-725 just north of I-66 and Rte. 55.. We will hike north about 9 miles to where the AT enters Sky Meadows State Park, have lunch, and then return the same way for a total of 18 miles and around 3000 feet of elevation gain. Since it is an out and back, it will be easy for anyone wishing less mileage to cut it shorter.

Tuesday, April 16, 2024 -  Pine Hill Trail to AT & Back on Broad Hollow Trail. We will start at the parking area off Rt. 681 and go down the road, up Pine Hill Gap trail down, down the Short Mtn. Trail, up the Hannah Run trail and across to and up the AT. We will return via the Hazel Mtn. and Broad Hollow trials to the start. Approximately 17.5 miles and 3900 feet elevation gain. Taking the Piney Branch to the Hull School Trail  and  right  on  the  Thornton  River  Trail  taking the  AT  north to the Sugarloaf taking it the Piney Branch trail back to the start. Approximately 17 miles and 3,400 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday, February 13, 2024 - Staunton River Trail Loop - (Central District SNP - (PATC Map 10): Parking at the end of Rt. 662   38.437128, -78.367081  We will climb the Staunton River Trail, Jones Mountain Trail, Cat Knob Trail, and Laurel Prong Trail to the AT. We’ll then head north on the AT to Milam Gap. We’ll descend the Mill Prong Trail through Rapidan Camp and return to the start via the Laurel Prong, Fork Mountain and Staunton River Trails. Approximately 20 miles with 4600 ft of climb.

Tuesday, October 3, 2023 -  Cacapon State Park, Berkeley Springs WV 8:30 am   Starting at the Nature Center we will climb Cacapon Mountain via the Laurel and Ziler trails, then do a counter-clockwise loop around the mountaintop on the Ziler Loop, making another ascent.  We will then head south (left) on the mountaintop fire road for three miles to the mountain overlook for lunch.  We will then head downhill for three miles on the gravel road to Batt Picnic area, where we will pick up the Central Trail across the mountain, then take the Tower Trail and Piney Ridge trail to the lodge, then back to the cars. About 17 miles, 3400 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday August 16, 2023 - Austin Mtn, Furnace Mtn, Blackrock loop - Parking at the end of VA Rt 663 (38.257350, -78.771045) we’ll ascend the Madison Run Road and Austin Mountain Trail to the AT, turn left to hike north to turn on the Doyles River Trail, then follow the Jones Run Trail back to the AT, and back to the cars via the Blackrock Spur and Furnace Mountain Trails. Total approx. 16 miles and 4000 ft. A significant shortcut can be made by turning south on the AT and avoiding the Doyles river trail.

Tuesday, July 11, 2023 - George Washington National Forest - We will do a circular clockwise route in the Little Sluice Mountain/Great North Mountain area utilizing parts of the Cedar Creek, Bread Road, Little Sluice Mt., Racer Camp, Old Mailpath and Sulphur Springs Gap Trails.  Parking/Starting point will be on FR 88 which is reached from I81 and routes 42, 675 and 608.  Approximate distance is 15.3 miles with 2880 ft of elevation gain.

Tuesday, July 4, 2023 - Elkwallow, Pine Knob, Neighbor Mt, Elkwallow - Northern District, Shenandoah NP (PATC Map 9):  Start at Elkwallow picnic area to the AT, south to Neighbor Mountain Trail, North on Knob Mountain Trail to the Knob Mountain cutoff and back to Elkwallow.  Approximately 15 miles with 3,850 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday, June 27, 2023 - Mt Marshall Circuit from SNP Boundary in Washington, VA - Parking at the end of VA Rt 625, (38.748378, -78.194069) we’ll ascend the Mt Marshall Trail, turn left onto the Bluff Trail and follow it to the AT. We'll head north on the AT to Jenkins Gap where we'll briefly follow SLD back to the Mt Marshall Trail and descend it back to the cars. The distance is about 17 miles with 3,000 feet of ascent.

(PATC Map 10) From the Old Rag parking lot we will go up Nicholson Hollow Trail, the AT and the Passamaquoddy Trail to Skyland's back door for a relaxing lunch on the patio. We will return via the Horse Trail, Old Rag Fire Road, Corbin Mtn., and Nicholson Hollow Trails. Approximately 16.4 miles and 3300 feet ascent.

Tuesday, June 13, 2023 –Buck Ridge to Sam's Ridge and back - (PATC Map 10) Starting at the Buck Ridge trailhead parking on Rt 211 near the SNP entrance, we will hike Buck Ridge, Hazel Mtn., White Rocks, Hazel River and Sam’s Ridge trails. Then return via Hazel Mtn. and Buck Hollow trails. This is about 16 miles and around 3800 feet of ascent. Bed prepared for numerous stream crossings along the Hazel River trail.

Starting at the Buzzard Rock trailhead on Route 619 (Mountain Road), we will take the Buzzard Rock Trail to Shawl Gap, continue straight on the Massanutten Trail, turn right on the Sherman Gap Trail, then right on the Botts Trail to the Elizabeth Furnace picnic area for lunch. After lunch, we will return to Shawl Gap via the Tuscarora Trail, and take the Buzzard Rock trail back to the trailhead. About 16 miles with 3000 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday, May 30, 2023 -   Brown Mtn., Rocky Mtn and Big Run -  We will start at Ivy Creek Overlook, milepost 77.5 on Skyline Drive (38.284033, -78.658780). Because the drive is a long one for most of us, we will be starting later than usual, at 9:00 AM. After a short walk on Skyline Drive to Brown Mountain overlook we will take the Brown Mountain Trail to Rocky Mountain Trail and on to the Big Run Portal Trail. Big Run Portal Trail to Big Run Loop Trail and on to the AT which we will take back to the start. Approximately 17.5 miles and 2500 feet elevation.

Tuesday,  May 23, 2023 - Burke Lake, Lake Mercer, and CCT section. Starting from South Run Park, Springfield, this fast-paced hike will circle Lake Mercer, with a side out-and-back through Pohick Stream Valley on a CCT section, returning on the opposite side of Lake Mercer and continuing around Burke Lake.  15-20 miles, depending on whether the many stream crossings on pylons are accessible.  Tread is a combination of pavement, dirt, and packed gravel. c. 1000 feet of gain.  Since the trail is not well marked and there are many intersections, we will keep together as a group.

Tuesday May 16, 2023 – The Wilderness/Chancellorsville – We will walk the grounds of these two adjacent Civil War battles that were fought a year apart.  Meeting at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center, we will car shuttle to the Wilderness Battlefield Exhibit Shelter.  There we’ll do about a 2-mile loop to the north and about a 7-mile loop to the south.  Then we’ll shuttle back to the Chancellorsville Visitor Center for lunch and do about a 7-mile loop around the Chancellorsville Battlefield.  About 16 miles with about 1000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday, May 9, 2023 –  Great North Lollipop - We will walk south on the Tuscarora Trail from Route 55 along the crest of Great North Mountain (VA/WVA State line) for about 6 miles until we descend the ridge in the Wilson Cove/Waites Run area.  We then loop back around to the north and up again on side trails until reaching the Gerhard Shelter where we rejoin the Tuscarora Trail and head back to the trail head.  Approximately 18.5 miles and 3400 feet of elevation gain. Tuesday, April 18, 2023 – Snyder Knob Off-Trail Adventure - Starting at Trout Pond in George Washington National Forest, we will attempt to follow abandoned trails and roads to access the north ridge of Snyder Knob. After bushwhacking up the north ridge, we will bushwhack down the east ridge and use maintained trails and roads to return to Trout Pond. About 12 miles with 3000 feet of ascent. There will also be a vigorous non-bushwhacking alternative in the area.

Follow Nicholson Hallow Trail climbing to Hot Mtn-Short Mtn, then down Pine Hill Gap and then up Broad Hollow Trail to Hazel Mountain Trail. The follow Catlett Spur to Hannah Run Trail until it meets Nicholson Hollow to complete the lollipop, then continue back down to the parking lot. Approximately 16 miles and over 3800 feet of ascent. Tuesday January 17, 2023 – Second Manassas Battlefield Hike - Beginning at the Brawner Farm where the battle started on August 28, 1862, we will follow the Unfinished Railroad Grade that was contested for 2 days of fierce battle between the forces of Stonewall Jackson and John Pope.  We’ll then visit Henry Hill and Chinn Ridge where Union forces mounted their last resistance before being driven from the field on the third day by a surprise appearance of Lee and Longstreet's forces.  We will also see the part that George Green and the 17th US Infantry Regiment played in the battle fresh off the Peninsula Campaign and on their way to Antietam.  15 to 20 miles with less than 1000 feet of ascent.

It will be an out and back starting at US 28 to a point past Bull Run Marina.  Total distance is just under 21 miles with a 3,000 ft. elevation gain.  The elevation gain is from a lot of up and down rather than the big climbs we get in SNP so it's not difficult.

Tuesday December 13, 2022 - McLean Loop - We will begin at McLean District Station, go along the quiet side of the I-495 soundwall to Georgetown Pike and Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, and then take the Potomac Heritage Trail down to Pimmit Run.  From there we will cross the stream, take the Pimmit Run Trail to various neighborhoods and regional park trails within McLean back to the District Station.  About 17 miles and 1700’ elevation.

(PATC Map L)Starting at the Nature Center we will climb Cacapon Mountain via the Laurel and Ziler trails, loop around the mountaintop on the Ziler Loop, making another ascent.  We will then head south on the mountaintop fire road for three miles to the mountain overlook for lunch.  We will then head downhill for three miles on the gravel road to Batt Picnic area, where we will pick up the Central Trail across the mountain, then take the Tower Trail and Piney Ridge trail to the lodge, then back to the cars. About 17 miles, 3400 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday November 15, 2022 – Gettysburg Battlefield.  We will hike the battlefield visiting famous sites such as the Seminary Ridge, Cemetery Ridge, The Wheat Field, Devil’s Den, and Culps Hill.  We will attempt to do this in chronological order to gain a feel for how the battle progressed from July 1 to 3, 1863.  Along with numerous other monuments, we will visit the 17th US Infantry Regiment Monument near where Captain George W Green was wounded.  15 to 20 miles with 1000 feet of ascent. Tuesday Nov. 8, 2022Neabsco Boardwalk, Julia J. Metz Wetland Preserve and Leesylvania State Park.  Meet at 8:30 at Rippon Landing State Park, 15125 Blackburn Rd., Woodbridge VA.

Join us for a fast-paced 15 mile lollipop loop across the 3/4 mile Neabsco Boardwalk,  traversing the wetlands around Neabsco Creek, pass through the Julia J. Metz Wetlands Preserve, and enter Leesylvania State Park, which borders the Potomac.  Climbing the ridge there, we will visit a Confederate cannon emplacement, the site of the Lee family plantation and cemetery, as well as the ruins of a 19th century Fairfax family estate.  About 1000 feet of gain.

Tuesday, July 19, 2021 -- Tuscarora Trail North and Back -- Beginning at the Dry Gap parking area on the VA/WVA line, we will walk North along the mountain ridge for 8.6 miles on the Tuscarora Trail until reaching the Pinnacle Shelter where we will have lunch if the timing works out right.  From here we will reverse direction and head back, passing an alternative lunch site about 3 miles on where there is a wide scenic overlook to the west.  Blueberries should be prominent on parts of the trail.  17.2 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain.

Hikers will head toward Old Mine and then German Wilson trails. After an out-and-back at Half Moon Lookout, hikers will follow Halfmoon trail and then the Tuscarora past White Rocks to the Old Mail Path. Tuesday, June 7, 2022 - Staunton River Trail Loop – Central District SNP - (PATC Map 10): We will climb the Staunton River Trail, Jones Mountain Trail, Cat Knob Trail, and Laurel Prong Trail to the AT. We’ll then head north on the AT to Milam Gap. We’ll descend the Mill Prong Trail through Rapidan Camp and return to the start via the Laurel Prong, Fork Mountain and Staunton River Trails. Approximately 20 miles with 4600 ft of climb. A shortcut for a 15 mile hike is available.

Tuesday, May 17, 2022 –  Great North Lollipop - We will walk south on the Tuscarora Trail from Route 55 along the crest of Great North Mountain (VA/WVA State line) for about 6 miles until we descend the ridge in the Wilson Cove/Waites Run area.  We then loop back around to the north and up again on side trails until reaching the Gerhard Shelter where we rejoin the Tuscarora Trail and head back to the trail head.  Approximately 16 miles and 3200 feet of elevation gain. Tuesday May 10, 2022 - Brown Mtn., Rocky Mtn and Big Run -  We will start at Ivy Creek Overlook, milepost 77.5 on Skyline Drive (38.284033, -78.658780). Because the drive is a long one for most of us, we will be starting later than usual, at 9:00 AM. After a short walk on Skyline Drive to Brown Mountain overlook we will take the Brown Mountain Trail to Rocky Mountain Trail and on to the Big Run Portal Trail. Big Run Portal Trail to Big Run Loop Trail and on to the AT which we will take back to the start. Approximately 17.5 miles and 2500 feet elevation.

Tuesday May 3, 2022 - North on AT through Washington Monument State Park (WMSP) (PATC Map 5)-  Due to the closure of the WMSP, we will meet in the parking lot adjacent to the Old South Mountain Inn parking lot - We will proceed north on the AT for about 1 3/4 miles before we pass  the first monument in the country completed and dedicated to the father of our country, George Washington, in 1827. At the  Pogo Memorial Campsite we will have lunch and then return to the start. (17 miles and 3200 elevation gain)

Follow Nicholson Hallow Trail climbing to Hot Mtn-Short Mtn, then down Pine Hill Gap and then up Broad Hollow  to Mountain Trail. The follow Catlett Spur to Hannah Run Trail until it meets Nicholson Hollow to complete the lollipop, then continue back down to the parking lot. Approximately 16 miles and over 3800 feet of ascent. Tuesday March 15, 2022 – Lewis Mountain Off Trail Venture Starting from the Rt 667 shoulder parking for the Pocosin Hollow Trail at 8:45 am, we will climb that trail and then bushwhack to the upper reaches of the hollow to view homesites, a cemetery, a barrel stave mill machine, and a steam engine.  We will then connect with the AT and follow it north and, if time permits, climb Lewis Mountain.  We will then return to the AT and descend the Slaughter and Conway River Trails back to Rt 667 viewing the remains of another cabin on the decent.  The bushwhack can be avoided by following the Pocosin Hollow Trail and Pocosin Fire Road to the AT; about 14 miles with 3000 feet of ascent.  PATC Map 10.

Tuesday March 8, 2022 - At South from 522 Around & Back – We will hike the Appalachian Trail South from Route 522 AT trailhead in Front Royal over Compton Peak to Jenkins Gap; take Jenkins Gap Trail to Route 634; right onto Route 622 to Lands Run Gap Road up to Skyline Drive then turn slight right onto the Dickey Ridge Trail to a left on Springhouse Trail, then left on AT heading North back to the cars. Approximately 19 miles/4200 feet elevation.

Tuesday February 8, 2022 - Corbin Mtn -Pinnacle - Nicholson Hollow Loop - This hike starts at the Nicholson Hollow trailhead to make a loop over Corbin Mountain, The Pinnacle on the AT and back down Hannah Run and Nicholson Hollow Trails to a well-earned trip home.  There is a short, downhill bushwhack to make the connection between the AT and Hannah run trails.  Total distance is approximately 16.2 miles.  Total elevation gain 4,280 ft.  Please consider the potential for ice/snow at higher elevations and prepare accordingly.

Tuesday, November 30, 2021 - Burke Lake, Lake Mercer, and CCT section. Starting from South Run Park, Springfield, this fast-paced hike will circle Lake Mercer, with a side out-and-back through Pohick Stream Valley on a CCT section, returning on the opposite side of Lake Mercer and continuing around Burke Lake.  15-20 miles, depending on whether the many stream crossings on pylons are accessible.  Tread is a combination of pavement, dirt, and packed gravel. c. 1000 feet of gain.  Since the trail is not well marked and there are many intersections, we will keep together as a group.

Hikers will cross over 678 and continue on the Massanutten Trail to the Maneka Peak Trail. Hikers will come back to the Tuscarora and follow it all the way back to Elizabeth Furnace.  About 17 miles and 4000' of elevation.

We will climb the Overall Run Trail to the AT and then take the AT South to Elkwallow Trail. We will take the Knob Mountain Cutoff Trail and Knob Mountain Trail North through Mathews Arm to the Weddlewood Trail going south and then follow the Heiskell Hollow Trail and then the Beecher Overall connecting trail to Overall Run Trail and then return to Thompson Hollow. 17 miles and 4000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday November 2, 2021 – Lewis Mountain Off Trail Venture.  Starting on Rt 667 at the base of Lewis Mountain, we will climb Pocosin Hollow and bushwack to the upper reaches attempting to locate an old steam engine.  We will then climb to the summit of Lewis Mountain and investigate the abandoned lower Lewis Mountain Trail or the remains of a cabin on the Slaughter Mountain Trail; about 12 miles with 3000 feet of ascent.  There will also be a longer non-bushwhacking option.  (because of rain the bushwack adventure was postponed until a future date.)

Tuesday October 12, 2021 -  Neabsco Boardwalk, Julia J. Metz Wetland Preserve and Leesylvania State Park. Join us for a fast-paced 15 mile lollipop loop across the 3/4 mile Neabsco Boardwalk,  traversing the wetlands around Neabsco Creek, pass through the Julia J. Metz Wetlands Preserve, and enter Leesylvania State Park, which borders the Potomac.  Climbing the ridge there, we will visit a Confederate cannon emplacement, the site of the Lee family plantation and cemetery, as well as the ruins of a 19th century Fairfax family estate.  About 1000 feet of gain. Meet at 8:30 at Rippon Landing State Park, 15125 Blackburn Rd., Woodbridge VA.

After visiting Catoctin’s Buzzard Rock before lunching at the Harpers Ferry Brewery we will traverse Loudon Heights and take the  C&O Towpath back to Brunswick. In all, about 19 miles and 2600 ft. of ascent.

This is very rocky in some spots and also can be wet though the water looks low.  Since it is an out and back, you can always make it shorter.

Tuesday, June 29, 2021 – Halfmoon and White Rocks - (PATC Map F.) The hike starts on Waites Run very close to the Pond Run / Tuscarora trail and takes a counter-clockwise route. Hikers will head toward Old Mine and then German Wilson trails. After an out-and-back at Half Moon Lookout, hikers will follow Halfmoon trail and then the Tuscarora. We will stop for lunch before continuing on the Tuscarora past White Rocks to the Old Mail Path. This will take us to Wilson Cove and back to Waites Run. There will be an opportunity to cool off in the refreshing waters of Waites Run. approx.15 miles, 2500' elevation.   39.015528, -78.605237 (Capon, WV 26851) gives you the approximate location near a hunter campsite. Don't go past Pond Run trail or the bridge.

Loop - Central District SNP.  From the Old Rag parking lot we will climb Old Rag on the Ridge Trail and then loop around the Saddle Trail, Old Rag Fire Road, Corbin Mountain, and Nicholson Hollow Tails.  There’s an opportunity for a splashdown at the end; about 16 miles with 3100 feet ascent.

Tuesday, May 25, 2021 - Brown Mtn., Rocky Mtn and Big Run - We will start at Ivy Creek Overlook, milepost 77.5 on Skyline Drive (38.284033, -78.658780). Because the drive is a long one for most of us, we will be starting later than usual, at 9:00 AM. After a short walk on Skyline Drive to Brown Mountain overlook we will take the Brown Mountain Trail to Rocky Mountain Trail and on to the Big Run Portal Trail. Big Run Portal Trail to Big Run Loop Trail and on to the AT which we eill take back to the start. Approximately 17.5 miles and 2500 feet elevation.

Hikers will then climb back up to the AT passing Corbin Cabin on the way. Hikers will then descend Crusher ridge down to 669, make a right and head for the parked cars near the Leading Ridge Trail. Tuesday, March 9, 2021 - Bearfence, Big Creek, Conway River, and Devils Ditch Off Trail Venture -  Beginning at Bearfence on the central section of Skyline Drive, we will do a loop including the off-trail falls on Big Creek, the Conway River, and Devils Ditch Falls.  This is a combination of Jack Thorson's November 2003 and September 2008 waterfall hikes.  About 13 miles with 4000 feet of ascent.  There will also be a longer non-bushwhacking option.

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 -- Tuscarora Trail and More  -- Beginning at the Dry Gap parking area, we will walk North for 3 miles on the Tuscarora Trail until descending the mountain along a power line.  After 3 road miles we turn onto the old Tuscarora Trail and ascend the mountain for lunch at a wide scenic overlook.  From there it's another 6.5 miles on the Tuscarora back to our cars.  17.2 miles and 2500 feet of elevation gain.

Tuesday, February 2, 2021  – Dickey Ridge Snow storm Hike.  Although the big snowstorm turned into an icy dud here in the DC Metropolitan area, there is promise of better snow conditions in Shenandoah NP.  So we will climb the Dickey Ridge Trail from the Park boundary  (38.9064,-78.1962) , me with my telemark skis, and ski back on Skyline Drive.  It's a bunny slope ski if anyone else wants to attempt it.  Otherwise, this plan offers maximum flexibility for hikers to do an out and back on the Trail or the Drive as they are comfortable with conditions.

Tuesday June 30, 2020 - Halfmoon and White Rocks - (PATC Map F.) The hike starts on Waites Run very close to the Pond Run / Tuscarora trail and takes a counter-clockwise route. Hikers will head toward Old Mine and then German Wilson trails. After an out-and-back at Half Moon Lookout, hikers will follow Halfmoon trail and then the Tuscarora. We will stop for lunch before continuing on the Tuscarora past White Rocks to the Old Mail Path. This will take us to Wilson Cove and back to Waites Run.  Tuesday, June 2, 2020  –  Little Devils Stairs - We will begin at Little Hogback Overlook on Skyline Drive.  The loop that involves using the Little Devils Stairs Trail is 13 miles, but we will add 2 miles to that by doing a there-and-back to Elkwallow.  The route goes south on the AT past the junction with Piney Ridge all the way to Elkwallow, backtracks to the Piney Ridge Trail, continues along the Fork Mountain Trail, turns left onto the Hull School Trail, descends down the fire road to the trailhead for Little Devils Stairs, takes the Little Devils Stairs Trail where it terminates at the fire road again, take the fire road to the AT, and take the AT to Little Hogback. Total of about 15 miles, with 4000 ft. of climb.

Tuesday April 28, 2020 - Sky Meadows Park - (PATC Map 8) We will meet at 8:00am for an out and back along the AT starting at the parking lot on VA-725 just north of I-66 and Rte. 55.. We will hike north about 9 miles to where the AT enters Sky Meadows State Park, have lunch, and then return the same way for a total of 18 miles and around 3000 feet of elevation gain. Since it is an out and back, it will be easy for anyone wishing less mileage to cut it shorter.

Tuesday April 21, 2020 – Green and Powell Mountains with Seven Bends State Park Exploration – Starting in the parking area for Little Fork Recreation Area in George Washington National Forest, we will climb Green Mountain on a closed ATV trail and follow the Green Mountain Trail to Opechee Peak.  We will then descend to Peters Mill Run and climb Powell Mountain on the Bear Trap Trail to the Massanutten Trail.  Near the Bar None Trail, we will descend to Seven Bends State Park on the Talus Trail.  Depending on the time, we will explore most of the other trails in this new state park.  We will then hopefully locate a newly blazed trail that reclimbs Powell Mountain to rejoin the Massanutten Trail to Woodstock Tower.  From there we will descend the Wagon Road back to Little Fork Recreation Area.  15 to 18 miles with about 3500’ of ascent.  See PATC Map G and the Seven Bends State Park Trail Guide at https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/data/trail-guide-sevenbends.pdf.

Tuesday April 7, 2020 - 17th Redbud Challenge - Great North Mountain, WV - We’ll honor our founder and leader emeritus, Cliff Noyes, by attempting a 25-mile (5000' ascent) hike he led (and lowballed!) 12 years ago.  Its a loop in the Great North Mt. area starting and ending at Bucktail  parking off of Trout Run Road (23/10) about 6 miles from Wardensville WV.  There will be a mandatory cutoff-time bailout at 13 miles that reduces the total distance to 20.5 miles; there are no other convenient shortcuts.

January 28, 2020 – Off Trail Venture in White Oak Canyon –  We will do a circuit starting at the White Oak Canyon parking area.  Provided the weather has been cold enough to form ice, it will include about a mile of bushwhacking to get a close-up view of the frozen falls on White Oak Run and the frozen seeps on the canyon wall.  Other trails may include the AT, Bettys Rock, Bushytop, and the Old Rag Fire Road.  About 15 miles with 3000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday October 15, 2019 - Browns Hollow/Roaring Run--We will start at commuter lot off of US 211 and heads south on the Massanutten trail to Browns Hollow. From there we will do a mostly clockwise hike with one out and back. Take a left on Browns Hollow to Roaring Run. Bear left to go down to Catherine Furnace and back to Browns Hollow intersection where we plan to have lunch. After lunch, continue up Roaring Run and then down to the Massanutten. Bear right and hike to a gated connecting trail to Bird Knob on the left. After about half a mile, turn right on Bird Knob which leads directly into the Massanutten trail. Bearing left (north), continue on the trail back to the parking lot. 18 miles, 3900' of elevation.

The 11th annual DC Tuesday Vigorous Hike!  We will travel around 17.5 miles and ascend around 2000', yet only need to use a handful of city blocks to do it. The rest of the way will be through Washington's beautiful and historic parks, with about half of the trip near and along Rock Creek. Tuesday, 1 Oct, 2019 - New Market Gap to Strickler and Duncan Knobs. PATC Map G:  Starting from the commuter parking area approximately one mile East of New Market Gap on route 211 we will take the Massanutten Connector Trail for 2.1 miles to the Massanutten Trail.  We will take the Massanutten Trail for about three miles and then follow the use trail along the Massanutten Mountain ridgeline on an out-and-back to Strickler Knob.  We will rejoin the Massanutten Trail northbound to the Gap Creek Trail and then climb the Gap Creek Trail to take the short out-and-back to Duncan Knob.  After visiting Duncan Knob we will continue on the Gap Creek Trail westbound for a short distance to the Scothorn Gap Trail then follow the Scothorn Gap Trail South 1.6 miles to the Massanutten Trail.  Take the Massanutten Trail 2.1 miles South to the Massanutten Connector Trail then following this trail back to parking.  Approximately 14 miles with 2500’ of elevation gain.

Hikers will then climb back up to the AT passing Corbin Cabin on the way. Hikers will then descend Crusher ridge down to 669, make a right and head for the parked cars near the Leading Ridge Trail. We will take the Salamander trail to the AT and on to Fishers Gap, then back via the Horse Trail and down Cedar Run Trail. (17 miles with 3,500 feet of elevation gain).

Starting at the end of SR 625, we'll climb the Mt Marshall trail to the Bluff trail which we'll follow to the AT.  Hiking north on the AT to Jenkins Gap, we'll return to the cars via the Mt Marshall trail. About 18 miles and 3000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday, January 16, 2018 - Piney Ridge–AT–Hull School Trail Loop -- (PATC Map 9) Starting at the Keyser Run Fire Road at the end of VA614, we’ll take the Hull School Trail to the Piney Branch Trail and Piney Ridge Trail then climb to the Appalachian Trail and take it south to Beahm’s Gap.  Return via the Hull School Trail to parking. Approximately 17 miles with 3,500’ elevation gain.

Tuesday January 9, 2018  - A Slice of HAM. - End-to-end hike on the Maryland AT from the Weaverton Rd parking lot north to the parking lot just over the Interstate 70 footbridge, with cars pre-positioned for return to the starting point. The distance will be 19.5 miles with about 4100 feet of ascent.

Tuesday January 2, 2018 - Hickerson Hollow, Lands Run Bushwhack, and AT. (PATC Map 9) Starting where the AT crosses US 522 southeast of Front Royal, we will proceed to Lands Run Gap via Hickerson Hollow, descend the Lands Run Gap Road and then bushwhack up Lands Run to visit some waterfalls. We will then return to the starting point via the AT. About 13 miles with 3200 feet of ascent. For non-bushwhackers and those wishing more mileage, we may visit Compton Peak.
