Sugata Mitra’s work around the Hole in the Wall experiments lead to the development of SOLEs where students work together in small groups on an inquiry question, primarily answered via the internet. The role of the teacher becomes that of an encourager and connecter.

Questions - 5 mins
Pose an inquiry question.
Generate interest by offering a creative prompt, like an image or video, or playing audio that relates to the question.
Explain the SOLE process.
Nominate a helper and briefly describe the role.
Investigation - 40 mins
Kids work in groups to find answers online to the inquiry question.
Delegate behaviour management and problem-solving to the helper.
Use open and useful questions.
Document the SOLE. Take notes, photos, quotes, and audio recordings. Ask participants what their experiences of the SOLE were.
Review - 10-20 mins
Find a welcoming space for the children to share their stories of collective discovery.
Facilitate a discussion about the question itself and their investigation process.
Engage the kids in their own review:
What would they do differently next time, both individually and collectively?
What did they think they or others did really well?
A key component is the question posed. Questions that are large, open, difficult and interesting often make the best ‘big’ questions for SOLE inquiries. Here is an example from Mitra’s SOLE Toolkit:
This term, like many New Zealand Primary School classes, my class is learning about the Rugby World Cup. Areas within NZ have been allocated countries to study. Our country is Argentina. Given that I know very little about Argentina, I thought that this would be a fantastic opportunity to try out Sugata Mitra's SOLES in the way he referred to it in this talk when he went to Turin, Italy (you can view this at 14:19).
So following the Mitra recipe, the children self grouped themselves in groups of 4. They were told that they were able to wander around the room, and take other group's ideas back to their own groups. They were asked to find out information about Argentina.
After 20 minutes they reported back to the whole class. In 20 minutes they:
Found what the Argentina flag looked like
Found Argentina on the world map
Discovered that Argentina had two languages
Found pictures of food from Argentina
Found pictures of the Argentina landscape and wondered if they snowboarded
Found the Argentina National Anthem
Translated the Argentina National Anthem on Google Translate
Made connections with NZ and Argentina's National Anthem (they both had themes of Royalty and Freedom)
Found pictures of Argentina houses and thought they looked colorful
Wanted to know if the children in Argentina had laptops
Use the SOLE format to learn a new skill
How to make a movie
How to speak a new language
Have students critique a style of writing in their SOLE and then plan how to improve or change it to suit a specific purpose
