    • Please be on hand to participate in the 12th point of our Scout Law, "A Scout is Reverent", as we provide our chartered sponsor with our traditional "thank you."
    • All scouts are expected to attend. Scouts will be ushers, attend the service, and they will set up, serve, and clean up the brunch.
    • Parents are encouraged to be on hand to help cook if they are available. See Mr. Athanasidy or the SPL.
    • Parents who will be cooking arrive at 7:00 a.m. to cook sausage, bacon, and pancakes.
      • Need two shifts of parent volunteers, one shift to set up and another shift to clean up.

    • We are honored to be able to participate in this years West Point Camporee at Lake Frederick on the West Point Reservation.
    • 6,000 Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Venture Scouts will be participating this year.
    • The mission of West Point's Scoutmaster's Council is to provide scouts with positive role models and opportunities for personal growth through cadet/scout interaction, while at the same time enhancing West Point’s public relations and providing cadets with leadership opportunities. Nearly 200 cadets volunteer to participate in scouting events over the course of the year and the camporee serves as the culminating event.

    • What to Pack
      • We will have a challenging (but very doable) hike on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning…
      • Please make sure the boys do not over pack (30 lbs at most and remember to leave room for food and equipment which will be provided by the Troop Friday at Grace Lutheran Church)
      • The class A uniform will be required for reveille and retreat formations, formation on Saturday and all subsequent activities Saturday evening, for the religious services, and the awards ceremony on Sunday.
        • Gym clothes and shoes are the uniform for Saturday morning PT, be prepared to get them dirty and not be able use them for the rest of the weekend.
          • We ask scouts not to wear elements of a military uniform, such as physical training pants, while at West Point.
      • Absolutely no open flames are permitted at Lake Frederick. All cooking needs to be done with camp stoves.
      • No locking knives with blades longer than six inches, or butterfly knives.

    • Leave on May 17th in your set time frame and arrive at Roger's Rock Campground (Around a 3.5 hour drive)
    • Sites will accomadate 6 or more campers. Price: $24.00 per night. Includes Toilets, showers, and water source.
    • Saturday morning we will have a simple breakfast (bring yourself) clean up, and take a short drive to Ft. Ticonderoga. The days events will be planned!
    • Early Saturday we will gather at a restaurant (TBT) for a family style dinner than back to the campgrounds for a Troop 174 camp out.
    • Sunday morning we are planning a breakfast of eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, bagels, juice, etc. Clean up, break camp, and drive south to Saratoga Historical Grounds. The days events will be planned up until around noon or 1:00PM, than families can explore on their own or go home.

  • . Memorial Day Service: Yorktown Cemetery Grave Decoration Signup (For Both Flag-Placings)
    • The Yorktown American Legion requests the help of Troop 174 in placing American flags at the graves of Yorktown's veterans in the cemetery at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Yorktown on Route 132 and 202 across from Downing Park
    • About 8-10 scouts needed to have it done in about an hour, but more is fine
    • We'll begin at around 6:30 PM
    • Wear your FULL Uniforms
    • American Legion members will be in attendance for assistance

  • Appalachian Trail Trek - Arden Valley Rd. to Bear Mountain Bridge
  • This is a High Adventure Long Distance hike for the experienced scout (Star Scout or higher). We will be hiking a total of 20 miles over three days with full packs and sleeping over two nights.
  • Gear must be light weight (35lbs Max). Pack checks are mandatory the week before the overnight.
  • This will be a light backpack/long distance hike.

    • Food (Must Bring or Share). Food should be light and not perishable.

    • 3.0 Mile hike to Lemon Squeezer for Friday night camp above Island Pond.
    • 10.0 Mile hike to West Mountain Shelter Side Trail, NY for Saturday night Camp.
    • 7.0 Mile hike over Bear Mountain to Bear Mountain Bridge for Pickup at 2:00pm Sunday.

    • Meet 10:45 a.m. at the Yorktown Highway Dept. between Commerce Street and Front Street.
    • Attendance is MANDITORY. If you are in town you are expected to attend. Rain or shine.
    • We are the largest Troop in Yorktown we will have the largest participation in the parade.
    • Parade and ceremony afterwards: 11:20 a.m. - 12:00 p.m..
    • Wear a full official uniform, which includes the merit badge sash.
    • Free hot dogs and sodas for those who marched will be at the VFW and the American Legion across the street after the ceremony.
    • Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Let us not forget those who made the supreme sacrifice for all of us.
    • Turn in a signed permission slip for scouts whose parents are not going.

9-11 Memorial

  • Troop 174 took part in the 9-11 memorial service that took place at the Shrub Oak Memorial Center on Wednesday, September 11, 2013
  • The service was mainly about the five victims from this area that lost their lives (Patrick Dahany, Alen Friedlander, Simon Dedvukaj, Barry McKeon, and Paul Fiori)
  • While also reminding us to "NEVER FORGET".
  • Candles were lit and some people including Vishnu Patel, gave speeches

Clear Lake Campout

  • On Saturday September 28th, about 10 boys camped out at Clear Lake
  • it was mostly sunny
  • They played football, gathered firewood, and took a hike

    • It was continuously raining
    • Used saws and clippers to trim branches and bushes
    • They still need to go back and paint the blazes on trees

October 7th 2013 Fall Court of Honor

      • Colors were presented and pledge of allegiance and scout oath were recited
      • Chaplain's aide gave an invocation
      • Scoutmaster did opening words and welcomed everyone
      • Merit badges were awarded
      • Rank advancements were presented
      • New leaders were sworn in
      • Troop recited scout law, and the colors were retired
    • October 18-20 ThunderBird Games/campout
      • We collected firewood, played A modified game of manhunt, and went to the beach.
      • At the thunderbird games this year, we only ran one station: the bouncy ball race
      • Troop camped over for two nights
      • Weather was nice, however the wind off of the Hudson, made it really cold
    • October 26th 2013 SPOOKOREE
      • At campsite 51 (Not a real cmapsite we had to make our own)
      • Cleaned some of white trail, and had a nice hike
      • Gathered WAY to much firewood
      • Told ghost stories around our hand-made fire pit...
      • We all ate an un-healthy amount of candy
      • Some people dressed up (Greg as slenderman, Tim as some guy with a dead face, and Mr. A as a werewolf

    • Ball said that the dinner serves as a way to salute the veterans while pulling the community together in a special way

    • As they walked to their seats, groups of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, family members and well-wishers applauded their entrance and for all they have given to the United States.

    • sorted donated items such as toiletries, food, and electronics for soldiers fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places
    • put everything into bags as not to ruin anything else
    • Made boxes of food items & toiletries to be shipped (total of 501 boxes)

    • later they were loaded onto a dump truck to be taken to the Post Office
