Suitcase guidelines:
You do not want your suitcase to fall apart during the flight or on the collection conveyor so buy good quality and inspect it regularly for wear and damage. It will not last forever, and if you get a few years of heavy use be happy.
Your checked-in suitcase may be on the bottom and subjected to heavy loads; i.e. crushed, so ensure that any fragile items are in very strong containers or in carry-on.
68 cm is a good size for a checked-in suitcase; expandable versons will weigh up to about 20 kg when full. Bigger suitcases may be extremely heavy when full: difficult to manage and a safety risk.
If you will be walking on rough paths, two large wheels are best. Also ensure that there is a protective strip to protect from high spots on paths.
Expandability is handy.
Combination locks are best - no keys to lose.
Built-in combination locks are handy.
If you cannot manage your suitcase alone or with help from your travel partner(s), then it is too heavy. Do not expect help from strangers unless you are paying them.
