John Barkworth Junior 1788-1846 & Emma
John was the eldest son of John and Elizabeth Barkworth. He was born in 1788 and married Emma Boulderson in 1818 at St Andrew’s Church, Holborn, London. John and Emma had a large family of, at least, fourteen children!
In 1803 John joined the Sculcoates Volunteer Infantry as a junior officer.
John probably set up Barkworth & Co to separate the shipping Company from the timber business. In 1806 they had only one ship but by 1815 the fleet had grown to eighteen ships trading with the East Indies and the Baltic. They also had whaling ships in the southern ocean. Some of the ships were built at Hessle.
John had other commercial interests including banking and set up branches of Barkworth & Spaldin in London and Gloucester. He also became an Alderman of Kingston upon Hull and served as Sheriff of Hull in 1822 and Mayor in 1832/33. Like his father he was concerned about the welfare of the poor and generous in his donations. One of his achievements as Mayoral year was the erection of a memorial to William Wilbeforce.
He died in 1846 and Emma continued to live at Tranby House but later moved out. She died in 1876.
