Barkworth & Hawkes

Barkworth & Hawkes Ship Builders

John Barkworth and George Hawkes established a ship building yard at Hessle.

In 1811 they leased land on Hessle Foreshore from the Charterhouse in Hull. This was just below the north tower of the Humber Bridge.

The yard seems to have operated for only a short period. When the lease expired it was not renewed. Nevertheless the company built ships for the Barkworth fleet and for the Royal Navy. The most famous vessel was probably the Hecla, a bomb vessel built for the navy and launched in 1815, along with its sister vessel the Fury.
