Visit of Dr Chris Lintott on 13/02/2014

On the 13th of February, we were lucky enough to have Dr Chris Lintott visit Torquay for two reasons.

In the afternoon, Dr Lintott spoke to students and staff of Torquay Boys' Grammar School before unveiling the refurbished observatory in front of select invitees. The old 19" Newtonian Reflector has been removed to make way for a new Celestron C1400 EdgeHD, a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope (SCT) with funds coming from the school, donations from the Torbay Astronomical Society, (TAS) and Spirent Communications, This high definition system is situated on an EQ8 mount with full GOTO facilities and can be used to capture wide field, astrograph quality images. This will allow better ease of use for members of the society and students at the school.

In the evening, Chris gave the Hedley Robinson Memorial Lecture on the topic of “How to discover a planet from your sofa”. His excellent talk was presented with humour, knowledge and passion and we all wish Chris the best of luck in finding "Planet Lintott"!
