Professor Chris Lintott, Society Patron, former Society Member and former TBGS student, presented a Public Lecture on the occasion of he Society’s 70th Anniversary season. His talk was entitled “100 Years of Discovery: Astronomy in 1955 and 2055”.
The lecture was given in the Cavanna Hall of Torquay Boys Grammar School to an audience of around 200 persons.
The following evening, Professor Lintott joined members of the Society as our Guest of Honour, at the Livermead House Hotel for a celebratory Dinner at which Chairman, John Stapleton, gave a presentation on the history of the Society (and the history of Chris Lintott’s involvement with the Society) and presented Professor Lintott with a copy of his book.
At the invitation of Vice-Chairman, John Stapleton Professor Lintott was engaged to deliver a talk entitled “How the Universe can still Surprise Us”. This was given in the Forum Lecture Theatre at Torquay Boys Grammar School. After the talk, and unknown to anyone else, refreshments were served in the “Retreat” room opposite. Professor Lintott then presented Chairman, David Norman and Treasurer Aime Schofield with Honorary Life Membership Certificates for their long service to the Society.
Visit of Professor Chris Lintott on 21/03/2019
Professor Chris Lintott delivered a lecture on all the recent goings-on in astronomy, titled "The State of the Universe", to a packed room at Torquay Museum on the 21st of March 2019.
Here he is pictured with some of the Torbay Astronomical Society members who stayed behind after his talk:
On the 5th of November, Professor Lintott visited Torquay Museum to give a talk. He is pictured here with society members:
On the 13th of February, we were lucky enough to have Dr Chris Lintott visit Torquay for two reasons.
In the afternoon, Dr Lintott spoke to students and staff of Torquay Boys' Grammar School before unveiling the refurbished observatory in front of select invitees. The old 19" Newtonian Reflector has been removed to make way for a new Celestron C1400 EdgeHD, a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope (SCT) with funds coming from the school, donations from the Torbay Astronomical Society, (TAS) and Spirent Communications, This high definition system is situated on an EQ8 mount with full GOTO facilities and can be used to capture wide field, astrograph quality images. This will allow better ease of use for members of the society and students at the school.
In the evening, Chris gave the Hedley Robinson Memorial Lecture on the topic of “How to discover a planet from your sofa”. His excellent talk was presented with humour, knowledge and passion and we all wish Chris the best of luck in finding "Planet Lintott"!
