Field Trips

 
We have field trips on the Sunday following the meeting and there are many interesting places to fossick for fossils or minerals within an hours drive of Dunedin. In the last few months we have had trips to Akatore (for rhodonite), Toko Mouth (for fossils like sharks teeth, turatellas and bivalves), the Palmerston River (for gold panning), and Blackhead Quarry for zeolites like natrolite, thompsonite and phillipsite. At times we have weekend trips to visit rock sites further a field. There are experienced rock hounds who can identify most minerals around New Zealand. The field trips fitness levels vary from needing to have mild fitness to being fairly strenuous activity, e.g. digging in Nimmos Swamp for crystals
