Some rough notes on Audrey's life before this campaign:
Audrey was born to a family of itinerant halflings (traders? performers? thieves?), the oldest of three siblings: a brother and a sister. When the sister was still an infant, the family's wagon train (caravan?!) was set upon by (lizardfolk near the Hool Marshes in the southern Yeomanry????). Audrey was able to escape up into the trees with her brother Cullen, while the (lizardfolk?) killed everyone else in the train, including her entire family. The two siblings were in a dire situation themselves, when a (group of?) monk(s) came across the scene and killed/drove off the attackers. She still has a scar on her cheek from that day. [I'm more than willing to have Scott pick a monster or other bad guy that can come into the current plot, although I tend to visualize lizardmen.]
(The red hair of the halfling children intrigued the monks, who were worshipers of Joramy, the goddess of fire and vengeance?) Since they didn't know what halfling town the family came from, the monk(s) took Audrey and Cullen with them (to their/his/her monastery near the village of Highfell in the Little Hills?). She still doesn't know anything about her family background. The halfling children were raised in the monastery's orphanage. It was here where Audrey learned how to use knives and shurikens; she was an athletic child where Cullen was scholarly. She learned to revel in her physical prowess in competition with the other children, and in trying to impress her teacher -- (one of) the monk(s) who also saved her life.
Audrey's perspective on the Hoshi incident is informed by her years among the monks. While she doesn't like to appear sentimental, she still feels indebted to the monks who saved her life, and would make sure that a monk had the proper treatment in death.
When she came of age, she didn't fit in to the monastery life. (Note re: Greyhawk culture: gender or race issues with monks?) She left her brother there, and went to (the big city/Longspear?). She fell in with a "bad crowd," mostly because of Anson, a young bandit halfling with whom she became very close. He taught her how to use a short sword and how to pick locks. They were an adventurous gang, and the experience was something of a lark for the girl who had spent most of her life in a quiet orphanage. Then there was the job that went horribly wrong, and she fled town a half-step ahead of (the law? the Thieves' Guild?), after they were betrayed by someone in their party. She still doesn't know what happened to Anson; they fled the city separately. She thinks it's likely that he's dead. Eventually she ended up heading (north into Sterich and eventually?) out towards the Chaos Scar, looking for a new start.
Audrey's motto is Honor Among Thieves - or - Trust But Verify. After the disaster with Anson's gang, she is scrupulous about fairness: even distribution of rewards, keeping true to her word, making fair bargains. She is vicious against anyone who has gone against her standards, but will keep to bargains made even with villains. (Cf Splugg, the Graybairn brother, mercenary in the prison)
She doesn't yet have an overriding ambition, but is simply looking to get by until something meaningful comes along.
