CANON (OR REVEREND) ALAN DOUGLAS JOHNSON was born in Cheshire in 1883 (4th qtr Altricham). He was educated at Eton school and Cambridge University before entering the Church. As a curate, he was at Astley Bridge, Bolton and the Ashton-Under-Lyne Parish Church from 1910-1919, this was interrupted by military service. Alan served as a Chaplain with the Essex Regiment from 1914 to 1919. He was awarded the George Cross in 1917.

On his return to Ashton-under-Lyne he was appointed Vicar at Christ Church, Ashton-under-Lyne. From 1921 he was also Chaplain to the 9th Manchester Battalion (TA)

From 1939 until his retirement in 1943, he served as a Chaplain on Western Command based in Chester.

Canon Johnson died in Ashton-Under-Lyne in December 1957, aged 74.
