C.A.R.P. stands for Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity.
Designs can become easily cluttered if you try to do too much to it.
Applying these principles will help you make sure that the layout
and styling designs stay consistent. It will keep the overall design
organized, balanced, and visually pleasing and also makes them
easier to read. Always refer to C.A.R.P. principles when evaluating
your design. Slideshare presentation on C.A.R.P principles.
Contrast
You want the information stand out. Contrast can refer to sizing or color variances. Make sure to use colors (if necessary) and different header sizes for your main header and each sub header to help emphasize the important information you want to stand out. Make sure your use of contrast is appropriate and does not take away from the overall design.
Alignment
Also make sure your layout design stays consistent as well. Keeping text aligned neatly will improve page navigation and will make readability smoother. As mentioned before, Western culture reads from left to right and top to bottom. Design according those standards where ever appropriate. It is not recommended to keep all text center aligned unless you are putting text inside a speech bubble, circle, any other type of graphic that does not allow left alignment. In that case, centering the text will be your best choice.
Repetition
Make sure to be consistent with typography, size, and color of your headings and body. Also be sure to follow the same layout design throughout your material as well.
Proximity
Make sure that there is plenty (not too much or too little) (white) space between your headers, body, and images/media. Keep the proximity consistent to maximize readability and page navigation.
