What happens during a chiropractic/acupuncture appointment?
The first time Dr. Walsh examines and assesses your pet it will take a little longer than subsequent follow-up visits as Dr. Walsh works with you to evaluate your pet and obtain a thorough history on them.
Dr. Walsh will want to see your pet move around to evaluate for signs of lameness/pain, changes in gait, posture, muscling, behavior, etc. She will also physically assess your pet. Dr. Walsh will look and feel for movement within the spinal cord, as well as the head, neck, and all four limbs. A full myofascial exam will also be done to evaluate not only the skeleton but the muscles, nerves, and connective tissues as well. Based on her findings, Dr. Walsh will then assess if your pets needs. The order and way in which she provides treatments for your pet will vary with each individual patient and their individual needs, personality, etc. When she has finished she will discuss with you what she has found and give recommendations based on those findings.
How long until I see Results?
It will vary with each animal and the severity of the problem. Acute conditions may show improvements within a few hours. Chronic conditions can take several days to start to show signs of improvement. In some cases, your pet may have an underlying lameness or condition that they are compensating for and hiding well. If this is the case than their treatments may remove these compensations and reveal the underlying lameness more clearly, which will allow us to address this inciting problem. With the more chronic or long-standing problems it may take 2-3 treatments before you see significant results.
Will my horse or dog have to be rested or not allowed to train after the appointment?
This will also vary with the degree and number of problems Dr. Walsh finds. The more painful the animal before the visit or the more areas that are found will increase the likelihood your pet will need to have a short rest period of little or no work. For the first visit or two it will be suggested to give your horse or dog light to no work for 24-48 hours in order to assess how they react to their treatments. Treatments beyond that may not require any rest at all. If you have concerns regarding this please call or email Dr. Walsh, or be sure to schedule your appointment at least 3-5 days before any major shows, lessons, trials, etc.
How can I prevent problems in my pet and keep them at their best?
By maintaining proper exercise and providing a balanced diet you can set your pet up for the best chances at health and wellness. Routine examinations by both your veterinarian and veterinary chiropractor/acupuncturist are essential to help prevent issues from arising and to detect any conditions in their earliest stages. This will allow your healthcare provider to make minor adjustments and keep your pet on the road to good health.
