Those so-called "accredited programmes" - in which the government and funders could have confidence - were decommissioned in June 2022. No doubt that was a result of the increasing awareness and evidence of their ineffectiveness. CAFCASS removed the list of RESPECT accredited programmes from their website, This list is something like . In one year Cafcass funded 909 men to programmes at a cost to them of £1,2m. They were unable to say how many men even completed the programmes but FOI revealed that 32% got a mid-way report.
In the attached list you'll notice the DVACT, provided by MIlton Keynes Women's Aid, are bragging about their recent re-accreditation - but since the programmes are currently not permitted to work - because Cafcass has stopped the funding - that seems to be yet another pointless exercise.
The truly amazing thing is that CAFCASS, as the children's guardians and representatives, even recognised an "accreditor" whose demonstrated work and interest was in simply advancing a radical feminist ideology. It had been very clearly exposed since the Joseph Rowntree sponsored research in 1998!
This one wasn’t built on the sands of radical feminist theory – but the DAPPs, that were imported from America via Duluth, were.
The original co-constructors of the “Duluth abuser” programme were Michael Paymar and the late Ellen Pence.
In the book Ellen edited and contributed to in 1999, Ellen very honestly recognised that the desire for power and control by men over women which they had very strongly heralded as the underlying cause of domestic abuse, and for which she had constructed the “Power and control wheel” often known as the Pence Wheel, had been a mistake. The book title page and her quote are here.
No wonder that the “Accredited DAPPs”, failed. They were built on Ellen’s sand pit.
Jo Todd (CEO of RESPECT) and Kate Iwi (of Pai Pact) revised a version of the Domestic Violence Intervention Project’s programme, (DVIP) no doubt they did that as a life-line following the severe criticism of DVIP in 1998 which emerged from research funded by The Joseph Rowntree Trust. DVIP was apparently within days of closure but was rescued by an anonymous donation.
It sounds as if they needed to be rescued again by The Richmond Fellowship in 2018. But in 2007, running 4 or possibly 5 programmes , and no doubt in Jo and Kate’s revised model they completed work with just 33 men of 220 referrals at an expenditure of £219k.
