Running Record Conventions

• Correct Response = Accurate Reading (Check mark each word for accurate reading)
• Substitution = one error (write out error above correct word)
  • Does it make sense?
  • Is it grammatically correct?
  • Does it look similar?
• Omissions = one error (use a minus - above word)
  • Did it make sense?
  • Is it grammatically correct?
  • Did he/she match?
• Insertions = one error ( write out word above where inserted)
  • Did it make sense?
  • Did it sound right?
  • Did he/she match one-to-one?
• Self-Corrections = no error (indicate with SC)
  • How was the error corrected?
  • What cues were uses?
• Repeats = no error (indicate with R)
  • Children re-read to confirm a response or to monitor their reading
• Teacher Tells = one error - T (indicate with T)
  • What made the child refrain from taking a risk?
• Try That Again = one error - TTA (indicate with TTA and brackets around section)
  • The child gets off to a wrong start.
  • Reader becomes helplessly tangles or confused.
• Rerun = no error (Indicated with R and arrow to point) Student goes back and repeats phrase/sentence.
• Appeal = Student wants help - indicated by an A.
