Smart board:

It happens: sometimes there are time constraints, and there is really only so much you can do in a day: this means in the classroom and out side of it (grading....) you have a life too.

Played with smart board.

objects in smart board are interactive. selectable. can be similar to working on overhead in the sense that you can work on already constructed stuff.

can roll dice

can leave main program, but still use its features :highlight, draw on things.... can take a screen shot to come back later to see what you did

how does the interactive white board get you into the mathematics? it seems like it can get you near it, but you need something else to get you into it. but you can use it to run the other tools.

when we use GSP with the comp there is a disconnect because we are moving a mouse which moves the objects, but on the smart board we are actually moving things.

Talked about article:

Devil says put 1000 dollars in an account. The devil will double it every day, and just take away 10% of the initial amount as his commission. The devil will double the amount that he gets to take out each day while he doubles the previous amount for you.

We set up the initial spreadsheet to show the devils arrangement.

Why does it sound like a good deal, but ends up being bad. What's the math?

What a crazy situation: they both grow grow grow, then one of them goes to exactly zero, then negative.

Gambling is like this.

Next step is to graph it. Hard to figure out how to graph it.

Youtube has thousands of tutorial videos, it can be a good resource. Showed youtube video. walked through how to create a graph from a spreadsheet. Then we plotted both sets of data on the graph.

going through this with the students can be helpful- like choosing how big to make the window, because mathematics helps us choose what we want.

This article is assuming that the reader is familiar enough with the calculator and graphing to be able to do this without needing to explain it. It's the math of the spreadsheet that's important to the author.

easier to see more of the spreadsheet on a regular sized spreadsheet on the computer than on the calculator.

looked at the ratio between our money and devils (ours/devils). might look at this ratio to keep track of how much each is increasing.

our rate of increase is decreasing. the devils rate of increasing is staying the same.

at some point they say here's the big reason for doing it on the calc instead of on the comp is because it can do algebra within it. can put in variables instead of specific numbers, and it will change all boxes to fit formula.

can do all sorts of algebra within the cells to manipulate the equations.

CAS= computer algebra system. calc has CAS.
