Senior Research Fellow
Full-time, permanent position. Working on several projects funded by SESAR Joint Undertaking: Engage KTN, Modus, BEACON and NOSTROMO. Currently also directly supporting the development planning for the creation of a new Air Traffic Management Research Centre at the University, where I will have continued responsibility for research innovation leadership and development, thus transferring my international expertise. The primary role within the new Research Centre will be to co-lead the planning for SESAR 3 / Horizon Europe bids, i.e. the core of the Centre’s programme of work, for a team of eight researchers, in addition to being the Centre’s nominated lead for research ethics, and PI on research and innovation project bids – thus coordinating the corresponding internal and external international teams.
A Member of the School of Architecture and Cities’ Research Committee, for a School of 140 academics.

Working on three projects in the SESAR2020: Engage Knowledge Transfer Network that aims at creating a scientific roadmap for ATM research and support young researchers (Ph.D. funding) and collaboration with industry. ADAPT project that aims at quantifying the flexibility and economic risks of strategic planning in the future ATM, and DOMINO project that aims at creating the tools for the assessment of the impact of the new tool implementation on the European ATM network. Continuing the work on the crisis management in the volcanic ash episodes in the Air Traffic Management.
Teaching the ATM management in the events of volcanic ash at the CVC training summer schools (in 3 editions).
Member of the SESAR JU Scientific Committee.

Expert evaluator: Evaluated SESAR1 and SESAR2020 for European Commission. Invited as an expert to evaluate research proposals for Framework Programme 7 call for Aeronautics. Brussels, June 2008, and other proposals for SESARJU in the past years.

Graduate Student Researcher (May 2005 – August 2006): Worked for California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT) on analyzing Freeway Performance Measurement System (PeMS) training requirements for PeMS training in Caltrans Districts. Worked on promoting Berkeley Highway Lab and improving its website.
Teaching Assistant (Spring 2002 – Fall 2005):
Taught 3 courses during 5 semesters. For “Airport Planning and Design” (graduate and undergraduate course) trained students to perform different airport design analyses and produce airport Master Plan (4 semesters). Gave lab and in-class lectures, designed and graded homework. For “Transportation Economics”, instructed graduate students in basic transportation modeling and economic models (1 semester). For “Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering” provided undergraduate students with support in writing short engineering reports.
Graduate Student Researcher (August 2000 – May 2005):
Worked for National Center of Excellence for Aviation Operations Research (NEXTOR), on Free Flight Phase 1 sponsored research on User Request Evaluation Tool (URET) benefits and URET and CPDLC integration. This research resulted in several reports and articles.

Collecting documentation for several African airports for The Berkeley Group Inc. Review of LAX Master Plan and analysis and critique of Master Plan gate capacity calculation, with professor Adib Kanafani.

Summer Intern: Worked on assessing the benefits to airlines (in terms of reduced flight times, using statistical methods) resulting from the use of URET in two Air Route Traffic Control Centers, for the Free Flight Phase 1 Metric Team.
